Hi, and hello. My first message here! I've a ford s max for my daily commute and I want to buy a secondary vehicle to use to take the dogs in. I've considered an older defender, a RAV4 or Suzuki Grand Vitara. I don't want to spend too much, approx £2/4000 for right car. Any ideas or what do others use?

does it need to be 4x4?

I drive a Citroen Berlingo - it's a small van. The one I have is newer, but plenty of other dog show folk I know have older models and they are in that budget. Diesel engine is very efficient, I get close to 700 miles on a full tank on a conservatively driven highway, but the way I cane it it's usually more like 400-500.

If you wanted to install crates/cages the back seats come out fairly easily.

Others like it the Peugeot and Kangoo - lots really like them. A bit boxy and so low on sex appeal but as a middle aged dog woman, I'm not bothered lol

How big are your dogs..how many?

Welcome graham...this is your first post so welcome again..!!!

I've had a ford mondeo for many years for my dogue de Bordeaux ,then rottie...
Then we got a vw touran ,for the following three st poodles..
Both diesel..both wonderfully reliable.
My next car will likely be a rengade type jeep..we live in the mountains..but have downsized dogs..now have one st poodle and.a Mini schnauzer.
I have always loved the rav 4..I'd go with that if its on yr list.

Re pucci pony....

I've got a Berlingo van and commute over 60 miles a day in it. It's awesome :D the only vehicle I would upgrade it to is a VW Caddy but that wasn't in my budget (or yours!). Its brilliant on snow and ice too, with a set of winter tyres. I had some shooters watch admiringly as it skipped up a steep farm track earlier in more than 6 inches of snow-their Kia and VW 4x4s had failed but they did have stupid summer tyres on though. Its an 07-I got one with low mileage and no VAT well within that budget.

following this post--would i be able to carry 2 dogs in a berlingo type and still have the 2nd row of seats (dogs+grandchildren) ?ty

I'd recommend a pickup of any make. Just get the front wheels higher than the back and you can hose it out and leave it to drain. Or a van with a bulkhead between the driver compartment and the dog compartment. Otherwise, expect smells and dust to migrate into the driver/passenger area and be a pain to clean. Been there, done that, got the T shirt. What about one of these? (Just Google "police dog van").

We definitely need 4x4. We have 2 big Rottweilers, which have outgrown my Vitara. They can only travel in it with the seats folded, which means no back-seat passengers, so we have bought a Discovery, which they really like- and so do we! There is room for passengers/shopping and plenty of room for the dogs, who can sit and look out of the windows. We have previously fitted 5 Labradors into a Ford Sierra estate, with back seat passengers. A friend has recently bought a Ford Explorer (?) double-cab with a compartment for her dogs - GSDs and Terriers

Yes. The cargo space is very large in the back of mine, even without the seats removed. I have two cages in the boot space of mine, one is for a small dog the other a med dog and the mid sized cage fits a large min poodle and a border terrier in comfortably - so would fit say a springer in it. Anyway, that one is just a fraction too long for the cage and the seat to be used together. I would happily put two Labradors without cages in the boot space and the whole back row of seats used as well.
