Ok, so i *think* i may have found the right horse for my winter project. I rode her today and really liked her and am going back tomorrow with my trainer for a second look. What would you look out for second time round? There was some mention of a behavioural issue from someone that has known the horse in the past, but it wasn't evident to me. I doubt she has done much hacking (she is only 5/6) but perhaps i should take her down to the end of the drive and back?

I guess second time round i really want to see what she has. Today i just worked her and popped a jump, including a double but nothing too complicated as she is rather green.

Any thoughts welcome - what would you want to see second time round?

Thanks,
N xx

Well thanks guys - over two hundred people looked at this thread and only one reply!!

Amage - thanks for the advice, i will try and take a video with me. I will also be putting my trainer on board so can see the horse ridden again.

Second time of trying a horse I try and "ride" it more, test it so to speak. I ask for things outside of it's comfort zone and see what the reaction is. Deffo hack it and deffo take it for a canter in an open field (if poss, you may need arm bands if the horse is anywhere near here!). I would also jump a course if possible, or at least put 3 jumps on and go over them all twice (making 6 jumps without stopping).

Hope it goes well

I think Weezy's idea of taking her outside her comfort zone is really good because that will show how she copes in new places or situations. I would also ask to see her or ride her around moving traffic as again you have to be sure she is safe. If possible ride her around other horses either in their field or working to see if she concentrates on you or them.

Good luck

2nd time round caught him from the field and lead him up to yard. groomed and tacked him up myself and went for a hack.

Came back untacked him and gave him another brush and then had a look to see what they were feeding him, watched them make up his tea and feed him and then took him back to the field.

Slightly different as was looking for forever pony rather than project.

Check what she is like in traffic... AND ask if she ever naps, especially on her own, nappers are very difficult to cure if it becomes established.
