secondhand hacking jacket - what would you pay?

Have been looking for a decent hacking jacket for ages - one that fits and (hopefully) flatters my...shall we say...mature figure, and have found one in a local tack shop that could have been made for me. Superb condition, excellent fit, perfect colour and an English-made quality and feel to it that makes me guess it is probably about twenty or thirty years old (it's a Caldene). However, it is £150 second-hand, and my husband napped when he heard the price, pointing out that I could get a new jacket for half that price if I looked about on the internet. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Depends entirely on the jacket and your pocket.

I'd personally rather pay extra and have a super quality well made one than a cheapy, not great quality/craftsmanship one costing peanuts.

I'd want a bloody nice brand new jacket for that price. We generally used to get jackets from tack sales so you can try them on for about £20. I wouldn't pay more than £50.

I have a Mears hacking Jacket that I need to sell, will have to check the size but I was only looking for thirty for it and its a Mears, Caldene is really mid range and that's just too expensive for a second hand jacket!

There is a shop near us that has a lot of second hand jackets ranging from £20-60. Some of them are thick, great quality hunting jackets or hacking jackets. For £150 I would want a nice quality new one.

I'd say that was pricey for a secondhand jacket and personally wouldn't go for it as you can get some very nice new ones for that price.
However! - if you have been looking for a long time with no luck and the jacket is in excellent condition and is something that fits you nicely and that you like, then I wouldn't want to talk you out of it! Do you think it's worth trying to negotiate on the price a bit? A tack shop near us with secondhand items will always take offers, so may be worth a try.

Its like good rugs and saddles - you baulk at the cost, buy a cheap one, regret it, buy a more expensive one, regret that as nothing compares to the one you really want!

Older jackets tend to be made of better quality fabric which hold their shape better, I would check the % of wool, at that price should be 100% and the seams and cuffs to see if its been altered. If they have cut material out of the seams to make it smaller or the arms shorter its a devil to alter.
My favourite jacket was made in the 20's/30's the cut and fit is superb and it is hand stitched. My daughter had one made to measure and even though its good quality it wasn't half as good.
£150 is top end but weigh up how long you have been looking and are you really going to need it.

That's a lot of money for a second hand jacket! I paid £40 for a lovely Pytchley one a couple of years ago.

I'd be surprised if it cost £150 when it was new to be honest. I doubt it will sell quickly so why not look around and see what else you could get for your money and if nothing comes up, go back and get it. I'm about to sell my hacking jacket (it won't fit you, sorry!) and I wouldn't ask more than £50 for it.
