Hi,

Well If you have read my other post about youths starting fires then you will understand why I am interested in security cameras and alarm systems.

However, I dont know how possible it is to install something like this as we dont use electricity on our yard!

Are there any wireless cameras or security systems, alarms that alert the police and such available to run on alternative power sources such as batteries etc.

As I say ...I dont know how possible any of this is so iam sorry if this post seems daft! Would like to know if any of you have any such system?

Thanks xxx.

You can buy dummy alarm boxes and dummy cctv cameras. They are very lifelike and even have a light on them to "show" they are on!.

Install solar power and an inverter
if possible install a combined wind/solar powered system.
You will also need a bank of batteries.

Check with www.12voltz.com - they specialise in stable systems.

I then installed an ADT monitored alarm with fire detectors - but the whole thing isn't cheap to do - but if your horse's life depends on it (and I lost one in an arson on an unsecured yard.......) then the money is worth it.

I'm off grid full time as EDF wanted 40k to run power 250 yards - and that quote was 3 yrs ago

They don't work - don't waste your money - they rip real cameras off the wall and know exactly how to avoid them. They also know that the police do NOTHING with CCTV footage unless someone is murdered or killed in vehicle accident. CCTV from private propety is usually viewed as 'not of good enough quality' so the police ignore the tape - even if you had real system and not a fake one

I DONOT agree with this statement. The Police do not ignore CCTV footage if it is good enough quality to identify and prosecute offenders. It doesnt matter what the offence is whether its criminal damage or murder. If the footage is of poor quality it is not that the Police "ignore" it, its because if you cant identify someone how are you supposed to prove its them.

sorry - but I got that directly from a detective !!
the Police prioritise crimes and they now no longer even record credit card crime which affects large numbers of people - horse crimes affect small numbers of people - so if they don't bother with CC crime they ain't going to bother with horse crime - esp. when we know that the perpetrators will either be 'under age of serious prosecution' or 'of a community that is outside the law' i.e. in enclaves where the police do not go willingly (or to put it another way - are sh1t scared to go unless mob handed)

airedale i am sorry that this is your impression of the Police today. It is true that crime is prioritised but some credit card fraud is investigated by the police. It is not that the victims are ignored its that the offences not investigated by the police are investigated by the bank. Therefore the victims are being looked after. I can assure you that every police officer i know WOULD take horse crime seriously. And as to your statement about the police being "sh1t scared to go unless mobhanded" into certain situations i will try and explain why. A police officer is a person at the end of the day, they are not untouchable and need protecting like any member of the public. There are situations where an officer will not go singlehanded willingly i.e a pub fight or directly into a community that is outside the law as you put it. There is a reason for this and it is not because they are sh1t scared. It is because to do so would put them in serious harms way unless they attended "mob handed." At the end of the day they are humans, why should they enter a situation that is potentially going to harm them unless they have the back up necessary to deal with it? Im sorry to rant on abit and please dont take this personally as im sure there are many more people out there who have the same view as you about the police. Yes their job is to protect, but not at the expense of being killed. Take it from a police officer who knows the consequences of going into a life threatening situation to save a persons life without the appropriate back up. Lucky the only thing i lost was my eye.

We have gone a bit off topic, but to clarify, the reason the Police are not investigating run of the mill credit card frauds is because of a change of legislation that takes it out of the remit of the Police, and places it firmly in the hands of the banks.

CCTV footage will be used, but it would be true to say that on a yard with no ambient lighting, the quality will be so poor as to not be worth doing.

There are some systems available and there is a sticky in the stolen horses forum with some useful websites and contacts (I know because I went to some effort to compile it and get it put there)

Smartwater is a good system, not very cheap, but they do a spray system that fits inside the tackroom, if a battery operated system is interrupted it will spray the intruder with a liquid containing microdots, the fluid shows up under UV lights and is unique. The code can be read under a magnifying glass. It can take weeks to wash off.

There is also an alarm that runs off a battery, if the circuit is broken a small plunger is designed to drop onto a key on a mobile phone to send you a text (audible alarms are useless in isolated areas). You can then attend yourself and call the Police on the way.

The key to protecting your premises against theft is to identify your horses and property so that they are not desirable to steal, no thief wants to be caught in possession of identifiable property..you would also need to put up lots of signs to say that property is marked and identifiable

Credit card fraud should be investigated by the banks, for too long they have been responsible for such poor secutity that the offences have ben allowed to grow. Providing it does not reach more than a certain percentage they are not interested. They are interested in profits & as long as theirs isn't too damaged by this then hey don't much care.

Regarding CCTV, if the footage is reasonable quality then it will be viewed & used by the police. One problem is that once installed CCTV is rarely serviced & the quality of recordings deteriorates.

As for the 'Detective' mentioned by you...he's a disgrace... he should get off his arse & do the job he's paid to do....waster!

we all know that I was referring to a certain community that are 'mobile' and not to things like pub fights which quite rightly take more than one officer
however there are certain camps that even mob-handed I know the police will not go into unless forced to by council bailiffs, planners, etc. or if there has been a murder

a friends dogs were stolen. They knew where they were - informed the police and the police would NOT go into the camp to get the dogs back - this is a FACT.

(he got them back by other means using 'contacts')

I had a police officer ask me how microchips worked and who had scanners to read them !!!

so much for having saddles microchipped !!!!

Without turning this into a slanging match, which i dont want to do as we have gone off the original plot ( sorry! ) all i can say is that from what you descibe your friend has obviously been let down by the police. If a situation arrises like this and the same thing happens all i can do is suggest making a complaint to someone of higher rank about the situation. It is the police's policy that ALL positive lines of enquiry regarding a crime is followed up regardless of what crime it is, and regardless whether it takes one person or ten people to do so. This is not to say the offender will be held responsible, this is unfortunatley nowadays upto the crown prosecution service to decide and not the police.

Off topic again - but beware helping the police catch any loose/stray horses. My mate did this (after they asked him) and they then b*****ed off and left him to look after the strays. They couldn't get out of there fast enough!
