Who here takes as many security measures as they can to prevent their horses getting stolen? I can't think of anything extra I could do, short of camping out in their field. So, when you see threads, texts and emails saying that a horse might have been targeted to be stolen (I'm avoiding the plaits discussion like the plague note!), or that a horse has been stolen, or that a horse might have been stolen - what difference does it make to your way of doing things?
People sometimes say that they are pleased to hear so that they can take precautions. I always wonder why they aren't taking the precautions already.

microchip and freeze brand. freezebrand is very obvious and very traceable. good locks on gates etc. but sadly if THEY want to steal something they will. the old saying where there is a will there is a way!!! but at least if visably branded it is more of a deterrant.

So, when you see a "be aware" warning it doesn't change anything that you do, because you're doing it already aren't you? You can't take more precautions if you are already taking all the precautions.

My horses are kept at home so it is easier to keep an eye on them. All entrances are either locked or have bollards up so that nobody could come with a horsebox and take them. We also have cameras all over the place and padlocks on the gates. My horses are also microchipped. Other than freeze marking I can't think of much else I could do. God you'd swear they were olympic horses with all their security :p well they're olympic horses to me anyway :)

Mine are chipped and freezemarked. I only keep them on yards with good security, YO living on site, guard dogs and alarmed sensors. Fields that are not visible from the road. I vary times I'm there, so that sometimes I maybe around very early or late.
That said, I don't lose sleep over them, I try to ensure they are kept as safely as possible, out of sight of casual passers by. Not foolproof, but makes mine a slightly less obvious target.
