hi my youngster is being clipped for first time next week am getting him used to noise and vibration of clippers but just wondering if to give him sedalin just to help him along dont want to freak him for first clip does antone else do this with there youngsters

it may be a good idea so that hes nice and chilled and has a good experience being clipped. mine had never been clipped before and the first time i managed to clip all her body except the top of her neck and face before she got fed up and freaked out big style. i hadnt bothered to sedate her then as she had been really good with the clippers being rubbed all over etc in the weeks before, i wish i had sedated back then. i use sedalin everytime now so that shes chilled out. it makes it less stessful for both of us and easier and quicker for me!

well the first time i used it my horse was practically asleep on the ground, however, the next time it didnt work quite so well!

No - never! Never had a young horse that objected to clipping - that's for older horses who have had bad experiences! And using Sedalin means that they won't remember a good experience!

We always spend a little time running the clippers near them - and then over them - perhaps 10 minutes a day for 3 days. Then have them standing in the stable, NOT tied up - just the rope looped over the neck. If they move away, quietly bring them back - or follow them.

If you're quiet and patient; stop for regular breaks so the clippers don't overheat, and clean them, oil them, re-tension if necessary, you shouldn't have any trouble!

If you make an ISSUE of clipping, it WILL be an issue!

that was exactly my view on it to start with JanetGeorge. clip them in a stable and be patient, stop and have breaks. young horse that have never been clipped means no bad experiences so should be good with clipping as long as you have got them used to the clippers.... however,

that just wasnt true with my youngster, sedalin was needed as she turnt nasty. but i guess every horse is different!

Personally I would try him without it for the first time, my baby was clipped for the first time this year and we gave him a horslyx when he stood still and let me clip, he soon learnt that this clipping lark had its perks!

Don't get me wrong, he wasn't keen at first but we just got him used to it slowly with plenty of patience. Each to their own though.

Just do a short clip the first time. Neck, shoulder, belly.
Some horses get figetty as it goes on as the clippers are getting hot. Sometimes they are frightened to see the hair falling off.

I have a local lady who clips and she has done several for me that have never been clipped before and we have never had any trouble at all.

thanks guys have been running clippers near him and putting body of them on him so gets used to vibration just trying to make it as untraumatic as poss
