Hi All

Our horse is on box rest and his behaviour has become dangerous. We still have over two weeks left and our vet has eventually prescribed us some sedalin after my husband was kicked and bitten by our gelding last night.

What are you experiences with sedalin in regards to how long it takes to show effects?

I dont want my boy to be sedated all day but more so when i am there and the stables become busy because thats when the behaviour starts. So i am trying to time the dosing correctly so it works at the right time.

I know it goes off weight, but hes a rising 4yo ISH who is very agitated at the moment and will bite so i think administering will be fun. If anyone has any administering tips that would be appreciated too :)

Thanks

Hi I have one on box rest at the moment and hoping that the farrier can put his shoe back on in the next few days so he can go out. I will be using Sedalin for certain.

My understanding it can take 30+ mins to have effect, I used to give my 700Kg horse 3.5 turns but that was prior to turn out so a lot less if its just in the stable.

Sadly we'll versed in sedalin here...

Make sure you give it when horse is already calm. They can fight off the effects if there's already something stressful going on. It's says 30-40 mins to take effect on the box, but I always give it an hour as that's typically how long it takes my horse to have the glazed over look! Also make sure the horse doesn't have food in his mouth before you give it, otherwise they tend to spit it out in a load of chewed up hay! I usually try to wipe it on the inside of the cheek.

I used it on my boy during his rehab after surgery, i found for him it took 30 - 40 mins to really kick in. For a cheaper option, Relaquin is the same thing but a third of the price!

I've found you start to see affects faster if you give it to them and then allow 20 mins UNDISTURBED so they don't fight it when being unsettled or things happening around them

I find it takes 45 min to an hour to take full effect I gave my Arab 15h 5mls yesterday for first time turnout, but I find sedation doesn't have a massive effect on him although he was a good boy and just wanted to eat my old mare 16.2 would be zonked on 2mls.

I would try 2 or 3mls to start it might just be enough to take the edge off.

Used it on husband's standardbred gelding following a check ligament injury. We used it when reintroducing him to turnout.
Vet said 2-3ml for light/moderate sedation. Took about 30 minutes to take effect.

Vet told me that the dosage is slightly different but yeah, fair bit cheaper. i had some relaquine for one of mine recently. squirt inside the cheek, 45 mins of quiet time later and i had a fairly drunk horse ;)

So ive been to collect the script and it was actually relaquine that shes given us.

Full dose would be 2ml for his weight but im going to try half that as I just need him calm enough for me to do stable duties thats all.

My worry is his manner/mood when i arrive he is always crazy biting up a height at this point, i dont have the option of giving it when calm? I guess all i can do is try and go sit in the car for 30 mins and see what happens.....

I'd just do that then, squirt it in and then disappear for a bit. I gave my 16hh 3ml for commencing turnout, he was pretty dozy and it lasted several hours.
