My horse is recovering from injury. He is generally calm but can panic when insecure. He is still on rest but now I can do walk hacks but I am struggling to keep him manageable! Vet has given me some sedalin and I gave him some in a small feed as he hates being wormed and gets stressed so subsequently administering it that method wont make it effective. How long would you expect for it to take effect? He was absolutely full of it and had about 8 poos! Shall I up the dose? However I think this probably just makes it last longer from what I know of it. Anything I can use daily in feed, thought about giving global herbs supercalm a try? Or the instant for just when I am riding?

I suspect that it wont have any effect on your horse. IME the horse needs to be in a calm state of mind when you give it, for it to work.

I've just started feeding mine James Hart V-calm which has valerian in it - valerian is banned from competition so I figure it must work if its good enough to ban! I am just bringing mine back into work and he's still on box rest and I think it has had an effect so far. He is not drugged and dopey, just more relaxed. For instance at the weekend I started off on a hack with my sister, but we split up as she was going on a normal ride and I am still on walk only. Normally this would cause him to get tense and then neigh the whole way home being uppity the whole time. He was a little reluctant to leave his friend, but we had no uppityness or neighing at all so I think it is effective. I bought mine from Horse health who were very helpful over the phone when I rang for advice on what calmer :)

When I had to sedate my mare she had about 2 1/2 notches (ie 1 tube lasted about 4-5 days IIRC) and I would walk her about an hour later. She could still blow up BUT compared to what she was like without it she was a saint!! She had never been naughty/spooky/bucky or anything prior to her box rest. She was a big warmblood and the sedalin was a life saver fo r me.

Good luck

Thanks. I have tried the valarian (inc the James Hart V calm) but this sends him CRAAAZY! He must be in the small % that it has the adverse reaction on. I might try the sedalin again, maybe slightly higher dose?! It will be hotter tomorrow so he will probably be slower!! Thanks for your suggestions, feel like I am clutching at straws a bit now as tried the two obvious suggestions. He had a good hour and half- two hours before the ride so should be well taking effect I would think? Know it takes a bit longer if in feed but still. Just want us to both stay safe and sane! Not even meant to be trotting but not a lot of choice at the mo...

This^^^

When my 18 months old Shire boys were gelded, they had been on box rest for several months (for an unrelated problem). I was so worried about them going bonkers when first turned out, the vet suggested Sedalin. We gave the boys 2 1/2 notches each in some food and waited about 45 minutes. It was miraculous (and made me feel like the best horse trainer/owner ever!)! They weren't sedated or groggy or in any way down. They were simply reasonable and manageable. They walked out to the field with the best of manners, grazed for about an hour, and came back in without a hiccup.

I can't comment, though, on using it for ridden purposes.

Will put on my tin hat and say in this situation I use a draw rien and just keep the horse contained
Hopefully in a few days things will calm down.

Ask the vet about Bromide. But be careful as it can cause the gut to shut down as well, causing colic.
Apparently used on TB colts when being broken in! So I was told.
My recovering box-rested horse went completeley crazy when introduced back into work, the effect of sedalin became less, and was very expensive. After nearly killing himself and YO, she asked the vet what to use. In the end he was just geting a teaspoon a day.

Another thought I lead one from another horse using a roller and side riens that worked best for him two of us riding me leading the patient and my groom closing him in on the other side , after a week he was fine to ride.

my mare (17.3hh) was on box rest for 4 months (should have been 8 but couldnt cope) and when we turned her out she got a full tube which set in after 30mins and lasted 4/5 hours.

she had a full tubefor 3 or 4 days, then 9 notches, then 8... gradualling decreasing till we didnt need any..... but this took over 2 months to achieve.

she would then get 3 or 4 notches when i rode/walked her. she also dislikes worming so we put the sedalin in dug out carrots or apples..... she was never bright enough to realise in the 4 months we gave it to her, jut kept eatting the apples.....
