We just collected from Sedalin from the vets for Belle as the farrier is coming tomorrow. She is not at all keen on him and is especially wary about her back feet... which she now needs shoes on for the first time!

The thing is that the dosage is not all that clear and I want to check from some people who are less thick than me.

It's Vetoquinol sedalin gel, 35mg/ml and the syringe is 10mls in 1ml intervals. The dosage says for "moderate sedation: 0.15mg acepromazine/kg bodyweight." Then elsewhere is says "2ml/450kg".

Belle weighs about 530kg so that would be about 2.35ml? This just seemed like a really random amount and I am very confused as to why a big horse would only require a small amount of the syringe. Please can someone help me? I suppose I will have to ring the vets and ask... :-/

Thanks to anyway reading (I hope Belle is good!).

It varies from horse to horse, but 2,5ml should sort her. It's fairly safe to use, ie overdose just extends sedation period rather than giving much deeper sedation:)

I would agree that 2.5ml should be fine. Just make sure you give it to her in good time, when she's still relaxed and chilled out. If she smells a rat and gets herself anxious before the dose has time to work, the reaction to it will be dulled. If she's relaxed when you administer it, it should start to take effect within half an hour or so, after which the medication should do its job.

Good luck :)

When my mare was being turned out after 2 1/2 weeks solid box rest, vet said to give her 3ml, which didn't zonk her out, but certainly calmed her down enough that she didn't go banana's....

It was also used on her when she tied up to relax her muscles and she had 2ml twice a day then....

It varies massively, my horse was on box rest and 2ml pretty much knocked him out and made him 'off' the next day. When it came to turning out I gave him 2ml again and it did nothing. You have to give it before any adrenalin kicks in as it doesnt work. My horse is a 16.2 MW that weighs prob about 625??
Friends 14.2 pony had 1 and a half syringes to clip but it didnt touch her.

i would go for a 2.5 to 3 ml dose approx 1 hour before the 'Event'. keep her calm whilst adminstering and the next hour! do not stimulate or stress the horse otherwise the adreneline will overtake! if she really doesnt like the farrier and becomes evil then i would give her 4 to 5 mls at least 1 hour before the event!!!

Ooh I used it for one of my boys who the farrier refused to shoe without 'help' He is almost 14hh and cob. I gave him 3 measures of the syringe and it ZONKED him totally. He had two measures for the next few times, then one, and now none!! Shoeing problem solved. Only used two syringes in all, farrier happy, I'm happy and ponio happy! Result!

Saying that, ACP tablets didn;t work at all on another pony
