Hi guys,

My mare is having her first clip with me tomorrow - her previous owner tried her once with no sedalin and she was extremely frightened and lashed out. I have had her for 2yrs and have recently been trying out clippers around her - she is ok if I turn them on nr her and if I touch her with my hand whilst I am holding them and they are running.

My instructor is going to clip her tomorrow and the vet has given me a tube of sedalin - she comes up as 475kg on the weigh tape and is a 14.3 arab x cob. the vet has recommended I give 2.5ml (for 500kg weight) about 1 hr before clipping.

Does this sound about right? I have never used sedalin before and want to make sure it works and that I give the correct amount - the vet did say it doesnt sedate them as much as just takes the edge off - not sure this will be enough to keep her calm!

Any advice really appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi
I gave me 16.1 mare nearly a whole tube and didnt make much difference, (this was to try and shoe her). BUT, it may as you say take the edge of, different horses respond differently to it. I had my 6year old clipped for the 1st time last week, we took it real slow, and ended up only doing a bib clip as she got real fidgety and I decided little and often, to make is as stress free as possible (for her anyway!) and then do a bit more in a few weeks. As it is the bib is where she sweats most anyway. Rub the clippers over her switch off and give her loads of praise and carrots, then stand by her with them turned on, and just do it little by little, good luck let us know how you go!

I have to use sedalin to clip my 15.1. Last time i gave him the recommended dose and it didn't even touch the side and i had to give him the rest of the tube, which did work eventually. Make sure you give your horse plenty of time to let the sedalin kick in.
