I am travelling a 10 month old dutch warmblood foal tomorrow. The vet has said that we can use some sedalin if needed for loading. I haven't used this before. Has anyone used it? How long does it take to work? any advice appreciated

Oh how i agree with B.O.F..When i had to take my youngster to the vet for an OP he really surprised me and walked straight on and did not move during the whole journey, remember that its a youngster and technically they dont know that travelling can be bad since there has not yet been a bad experience..can you bring a traveler partner for the little one on the journey ?

OH NO! She is going for about 4 hours to a specialist vet centre. She is getting picked up by a transporter and there shouyld be another horse in the lorry...I'm not looking forward to this...

Sedating a youngster to travel IMO is a very very bad idea. Definately not something I would do out of choice. Not only will it effect co-ordination it can inhibit the horses temperature regulation.

i wouldnt sedate her either, she'l probably travel no problem and if you sedate her and it wears off half way through she's more likely to get frightened, then because that will be a bad experience you'l have future problems trying to load/travel her!

Well...here's an update!

In the stable this morning she started bucking and rearing so decided to give her 1/2 the recommended amount for her weight. This calmed her slightly (more calming than sedating at this dose!) and loading was no problem. A very calm occassion for all concerned.

I think this was better than causing any issues with loading and hopefully will help her for next time.

She was travelled loose in a compartment in the back of the lorry.

And I believe travelled well and has arrived safely!

I did only use the Sedalin in conjunction with vet advice as I believe it should not be used willynilly!

Thank you all so much for your help
