sedalin virgin! questions?

Haven never used sedalin before, i have been reading up on it on here. Now it says that if the horse is stressed already before or at the time of administering the sedalin it wont be as effective. My horse hates being wormed with syringes and as sedalin comes in a syringe she will be stressed before i have started!!
She desperately needs her mane pulling i have tried desensitizing for over a month now, tried a solo comb, scissors everything and nohing is working, she gets stressed, bargy and is a total nightmare so sedalin is my final option before getting the vet out to *properley* sedate her :( if i can get it all done in one go then i can move on!!

question 1 - Can it be given in a small feed? also will ask my vet for dosage rules.

question 2 - I believe it can take over an hour to work, horse is living out 24/7 will she be okay to have the sedalin then be turned out then brought in OR does she need the sedalin then be stabled untill it has kicked in?

question 3 - How effective is it for mane pulling (well using a solo comb?) she gets very stressed and tries to squash me when i try and becomes quite a dangerous task!

Yes - if she's a greedy pig who polishes off EVERYTHING. But you won't be sure how much she's actually eaten - and it will take a bit longer to kick-in.

She needs to be kept VERY calm while it's kicking in. Ifshe goes nuts in the stable - or charges around in the field, it won't work!

Not very - for a horse who really HATES mane pulling!

t that's after trying a bit of 'forcible' restraint - which works for most!

She is a greedy pig and shes not really the sort to loon around the field so i guess thats okay then :)

Planning on doing it wednesday when i will have the whole day if i need it!
 
hi i give my horse sedlin in pitted out apple halves i think it tastes quit bitter so a put a dab of molasses in as well and use a couple of apples, a small amount keeps my big boy quite chilled for the farrier but he really hates his mane being pulled so comes out from the sedlin! he has to be fully sadated by the vet to get his done !
 
I am not sure your vet would give it out for mane pulling, but you can always ask...

If I give Sedalin I use an apple or carrot, just put a dab on each piece and feed it from your hand. I don't think putting it in a bucket of feed is very good because if they tip the bucket up, the majority of the drug can be lost.

I have recently been given a much more powerful sedative gel called Dermosedan, and I think you could probably do brain surgery when they are on that !
 
If your talking Sedalin Gel then it's brill. But the vet has to perscribe and check your horses heart.

Your best to rub it on the gums small amount as that way it gets straight into the bloodstream about 20 - 30 mins lastest about 6 hours on our bargy Palamino. Before Sedalin couldn't get him shod without 3 blacksmiths and me and OH hanging onto him. Sedalin Gel tied up one blacksmith (they were very appreciative):D. If its the tabs not very good.:(
 
I've seen a horse who hates having his mane pulled done under sedalin. He was still fidgety but had the 'edge' taken off. Why don't you try a twitch? I know some people might not agree with them, but it might be more effective and less dangerous... Plus you will have another handler. Just a thought :)
 
I have found sedalin very hit and miss with horses, it works ok on some and does nothing for others. And when it does work if your doing something your horse absolutely hates then dont expect miricles, used it for an exray on my pony once who refused to stand still long enough, so rebooked the machine the following week and I gave him sedalin and if anything he was more fidgity because he must of felt wierd.
 
It'll take the edge off but if they're going to object they still will. Gerry had two tubes once before a vet visit and still managed to kick the vet at lightning speed when she looked like she was going to try and inject him.

I find Domosedan harder to administer because you have to get it under the tongue. If OP says that her horse won't allow worming syringes I would have thought it wouldn't work for her.

I doesn't have to go under the tongue - any membrane will do, what I do is put a latex glove on, squirt Domosedan on my fingers and wipe off inside of the mouth - no syringe anywhere near and more often than not the horse hasn't noticed :)
