Hi there

This has probably been done hundreds of times before but we tried today for the first time with our tb to use sedalin to chill out freddie whilst he was shod. He is improving in lots of ways but still struggles with the farrier! - causing the farrier to exit underneath my other horse who was stood next to fred last time! Which is brave in itself!

I gave him 5ml (estimated him at around 500kgs as he doesnt hold much weight), this didnt touch him after an hour! - so I gave him the other 5ml, which worked!

He was a little wobby but I watched while he had dinner which was fine (was expecting him to choke or not swallow as advised), left him with a very tiny amount of hay in small holed haynet and OH is going up in an hour to check on him.

My questions to weathered sedalin users are:-

Can you overdose them on it - dangerously...?
I have been told you can use it and ride with it for competition? Is this right as it would solve a lot of our excitement problems...?
Any other info you have on it....

Many thanks
xx

I have used sedalin before when my horse has been having his teeth done. The recommended dose didnt do anything for my horse so my dentist recommended dosing higher. I think you can overdose on it but my horse was always alright with a small increase in the dose. I wouldnt have thought it was safe to ride a horse after using it. I noticed with Simon that the effects suddenly came on and would imagine if this happened whilst riding it could be dangerous. I will stand corrected if thats not the case!!

I use it for my horse when shod, but like 5-6ml and apparently thats still quite alot. maybe 10ml is pushing it a bit?-not sure, maybe check with your vet
BUT it does take about 2 and a half hours to kick in for mine then he's still drowzy for most of the day (i tried riding him over 5 hours later once...wont be trying that again!).
My vet originally recommended me using under half of what we do and only 30mins to kick in, it works differently on each horse.
Maybe your horse needs alot but perhaps if u leave it longer next time to work you may find he 'goes under' and stayes under. dunnooo

I gave my mare double the recommended dose to try and calm her down for travelling on the vets advice and she managed to fight it off as soon as she got near the box. I think that it depends on the horse

Try nupafeed (or a similar cheaper substitute) if you're having excitement issues at comps? It works by stopping horses getting an adrenaline spike & an attack of the sillies by making sure they've got enough magnesium in their system.

I know it sounds a bit ???? but it worked for my horse. Stopped 95% of the spinning out hacking too.

I have ridden on Sedalin but wouldn't reccomend it for competing. Horse was like a slug to ride( it was a nut case before hand).Def go for NUPAFEED. We have a horse on working livery on it and its has transformed him. He was a nightmare- spooking, whipping round , a total pr*t but he is a transformed horse now.

I have a horse that dislikes the nails being hammered in and am thinking of using sedation with my new farrier as my old farrier wouldn't shoe him. He wasn't really bad but kept trying to hop out of the grip which I know can be dangerous for both farrier and horse. Would you suggest I try sedalin? Does it have to be bought off the vet?

Im using Sedalin at the moment. My vet said give 2.5ml and my boys a middleweight 16.2hh. It knocked him out so I can give as little as 1ml just to take the edge off him (but then normal sedation knocks him out for hours). Saying that if the yards even slightly noisy, the sedalin doesnt work. If Im on my own at the yard and am very quiet round him it works fine. Once they are hyped up, I dont think you stand a chance of it working. Gave it to him today to turn him out after 15 weeks boxrest and it didnt touch him.
Im sure I read on here that you cant overdose with it but by giving more makes it last much longer?????

If you are competing you must allow sedalin to be cleared from the system - or your horse will fail drugs test. Our vet recommends at least 2 weeks - though we always like to allow more time just in case.

I would not ride a horse that had been given sedalin.

And don't forget - do not use it for an entire horse as can cause penile prolapse.
