Sedation and exercise?

Just a query really but if you had your horse sedated to be clipped in the morning would you exercise in the afternoon?
If so, how long would you leave it between sedation and exercise?
How much exercise would you do?
Would you treat the horse as normal?

This isn’t about our horses as they don’t need sedation for anything. I was just wondering?

Strictly speaking you should leave it 24 hours from the time of sedation. Even if they are wide awake again, their rection times may be down, which could be dangerous if you are hacking or jumping. Even just schooling as if the horse trips, he may go right down.

Safety first!

Saying that, I have seen people sedate horses the first couple of times they ride after box rest - but with those particular horses, I would agree that the risk was far greater getting on them without sedation!

The vet told me that I could ride my horse on ACP

I would never do this though as he also told me that ACP doesn't sedate them, it just gives them slower reaction times and they act a bit like they are drunk! Needless to say I will not be using this vet again. My horse has 6/7 ACP tablets in the morning to turnout (she has been on box rest and vet doens't want her charging round!), when she comes in about 3 or 4 pm she is still not her normal self! Trying to wean her off the ACP now as I want to ride her again at the weekend!
I would give my horses the rest of the day off if they have been sedated in the morning as Jo_ says even if they are wide awake their reaction times could still be slower!

One of my work horses had trauma induced laminitis that resulted in 6 months box rest - he is a real handful and the vet asked us to hack him out on sedalin for the first few times. He had very little and to be honest I don't think it would make a difference.

If a horse has been fully sedated on the yard for any reason I would not ride it that day, we also keep a real eye on them in the box.

Following sedation I would leave the horse alone & not ride until the following day. It can affect various horses differently so to be on the safe side leave it 24 hours.

I've ridden horses on ACP after/during box rest for tendon injuries.

You know, when the vet says in their wisdom "15 mins ridden in walk" on the loony T/B eventer who's been in for 6months!

Saying that, I'm talking one ACP tablet.
