Does anyone use Domosodan? I’ve never had one sedated for the dentist before and not sure whether I need to book a visit for the vet as well or they will give me something to administer by mouth?

It's illegal in the UK for anyone other than a vet to prescribe injectable sedation. You may be able to ask you vet to prescribe Domosedan, which is an oral paste, and very effective if given whilst the horse is calm.

Sorry, that’s what I was getting at. I couldn’t for the life of me remember the name! Thankyou i’ll try and edit my post.

I found Domosedan (sp) fantastic, the horse I used it on was as good as IV sedated. I’m aware these things don’t work exactly the same for all horses but I’d highly recommend, it’s a world better than Sedalin or acp.

An ex-vet who is currently not registered as practising, yeah still illegal to administer drugs to horse and illegal to possess them. If anything goes wrong, you have someone with no insurance or license who has injected your horse.
I’ve just checked and she is still registered as a vet so is completely legal!

Domosedan is the same chemical as that used by the vet in IV sedation (IV has one other mixed with it). How well it works depends a bit on how well you can give it. You use it a bit like a wormer but your trying to get it under the tongue to soak in through the skin there. It take up to 30 mins to work fully.
If you can get it in properly it's amazing stuff

When it doesn't work it tends to be because they swallow it rather than having time for it to soak in

Main benefits are cost - Domosedan is about £30 you have to get it from your vet but they can leave it out for you to pick up weeks before your dentist appt vs. c. £100 for call out and IV sedation.
also timing - if your dentist or vet are running late then the other one doesn't have to wait around. If you put the gel in as your dentist arrives and either have a chat while they set up or do another horse first the timing will be perfect.

my dentist is also vet qualified and registered so sedates for me just a bit to make it quicker really even though mine are easy.

not much additional cost either as no call out!

Thanks that’s very helpful.

We use domosedan for my husband’s horse if the vet needs to inject anything or do teeth - he will not tolerate anyone near his neck with a needle and injecting is not safe. It works like a dream. No issues, easy to use.

I use it for one of mine. My EDT administers it as she can put the gag on him and make sure that it goes under his tongue. This works well as she has a few to do so she can get on with the others whilst it takes effect. It does work really well.

Yep I use it for my gelding that needs to be sedated for his sheath clean, I only use a 1/4 of it at a time as it knocks him out (I mean he’s swaying!) one tube lasts 3 sessions.
