I'm looking for a horse for sale and I've seen this gorgeous one, pretty much exactly what I've been looking for, however, she needs sedation while clipping. can anyone recommend any sedatives/ would you get your vet out? I've seen a product the looks good- dormosedan gel, or another one- relaxmenow on amazon. any recommendations? x

When I viewed Robin I was told he was difficult to clip the top half of his neck and they used dormosedan. It didn’t worry me as it was his only issue. The first couple of times I used the dormosedan with good results. And once he was iv sedated anyway. I then tried sedalin paste and finally made the click between acp not working for him. He is now clipped without sedation. I have small very quiet clippers and take it at his pace and although he dosnt “like” the top of his neck being clipped he will allow me to do it.

Relaxmenow is a calmer, not a sedative, so will be of no use whatsoever for a horse who needs sedating to clip. IV sedation by the vet is most reliable, although I use domosedan on the one here who is dangerous to clip without sedation, and it works very well. They do sweat when sedated, so but I clip as fast as possible, and attack the bits that start sweating first, then move on to the drier bits.
I'm not a fan of Sedalin (acp) for clipping, as they can snap out of it with very little warning.

My mare needed sedating to clip certain areas (feathers and mane) for sweet itch so it had to be done. Once in lockdown it wasn’t an emergency so vet couldn’t come out to help us and I have used sedalin before with no effect... as I am furloughed I thought this would be a good opportunity to try and desensitise her. I bought liveryman classic trimmers (which are INCREDIBLE and even go through her very thick feathers) and after only a week of once a day moving closer/touching her with them etc I have been able to take off all her feathers and hog her. Before I was doing it with scissors every couple of weeks- it took HOURS.
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that these things can be overcome with patience, so don’t let it worry you. Also, even if they can’t, unless you’re planning on fully clipping her all year round, it will only need doing 3-4 x per year.
PS. Anything you can buy off the internet and not off your vet (or with a prescription) won’t have anything strong enough in it to work, unfortunately.

I've used Sedalin, Domosedan and IV on my difficult to clip boy, he's just so ticklish he can't deal with it. Domosedan is definitely the best for him but it didn't touch a friend's who had to have a double dose of IV. This winter we managed to clip him without sedation for the first time in 15 years at the age of 24 - only a low trace rather than the full clip he normally has as hes semi-retired - but I nearly cried!
