Does any one know if its possible to sedate a horse with a dart. its a long story but a pony near me was shot by a police marksman as vet said they could not sedate only by injection, horrific story will post soon.

Suppose they could

however if the horse was dangerous and it would put people at risk once sedated, then shooting it is an option (like any animal)

Whats the story behind it?

When I worked at Whipsnade and & London Zoos for the vets, they used to sedate animals with dart guns as standard procedure. These included Zebras & Przewalski horses. It looked a bit like a rifle with a dart & syringe filled with Immobilon. The vet would aim for the animal's rump and once the dart was in, the animal was knocked out within a few minutes. After treatment, the animal was giving the antidote (Revivon) and came round pretty quickly.

Yes, most big animals can be sedated using this method. Providing of course that the vets have a dart gun and are able to use it.
