Pete has a small crack in his left fore, is barefoot. On close examination it is about an inch deep underneath. I have been packing with Red Horse hoof stuff. Also keeping as clean as possible. Anything else I should be doing? Crack appeared back in June!

If it's been going on since June, I'd get the vet out to xray it and cut it back to healthy hoof.

Without wishing to scare you too much, my homebred filly had to have an extensive seedy toe resection from what looked initially like a trivial small crack.

With excellent farriery and good vet support, this grew out completely and has left no evidence that it was ever there. A 'barefoot' diet and pro Hoof supplement have helped her to grow a new and healthy set of feet.

It is essential to cut out all the the seedy toe crud.

Scrape out any powdery horn { i use a pair of small scissors} in the hole, then i use cotten wool soaked in milton, could you put some red horse products on some cotton wool then plug the hole, and leave it for a few days, then do it again, i find when there isnt any more dead tissue coming out, you can just leave it unplugged, but keep on checking it. It fills back up with horn fairly quickley.

agree with first reply - definitely get vet to have a look - particularly as wetter weather is with us, if not sorted out, then probably won't get better anytime soon.

We have one that gets a little on one foot every spring

It is the one thing i will use the knife for - I open it up and then use Swan's Antibac liquid on it.

I have in the past drilled down a treatment hole abive the seedy toe, cleared out as much as I cna and this allows gravity to get the liquid in.

These bugs are anaerobic - oxygen is the killer for them - air helps.

Your farrier should be able to open it right up - my little one had a foot that looked more like a cows cloven hoof for 6 months but it really allowed oxygen in and me able to clean it properly

Hate to say this but it took years to clear up the seedy toe in my horse. Farrier kept cutting it out. At its worse it had to be filled but eventually (touch wood) it all grew out.
