Seeking any advice/help for my friends Rotti

Hi

My friend has a male Rotti who developed what they thought was colitis, all tests have been done and she's done everything the vets said about his food etc, seemed to improve then went down hill again, he's been referred as her vet doesn't know whats wrong with him, he has lost all his muscle and they can't understand why, I just wondered if anyone else has had a dog have a strange illness like this as she is really upset and watching him go downhill fast in front of her eyes its awful, I hate to think what she's spent on vet fees but nothing has helped and he is still in pain and its taking its toll on him

Nothing concrete to add but an animal in pain will drop weight off really really fast. My horse has dropped so much weight in under a week its awful.

Hope the referral vet works out what is wrong.
 
You mentioned colitis...does the dog have diarrhoea? We've seen some Rotties at work with nasty eosinophilic inflammatory bowel disease which can be really tough to control and causes marked weight and muscle loss.

Referral sounds the best option at this stage. Hope they can get to the bottom of things for your friend...let us know how they get on...
 
My sisters rottie became ill several years ago where his red blood cells were killing off white cells (or the other way round). Can't remember exactly what it was called but the illness was basically this! Apparently it's very rare and our vet only spotted it because she was traeting another dog with a similar condition - we were told by her at the time that vets can go years without seeing a case and suddenly she had two! It must be quite rare because when a freinds rottie suddenly became ill their vet couldn't find cause so told her about our dog her vet then contacted our vet and it had the same condition. Symtoms were loosing weight/muscle tone, very lethargic etc. Hope this helps.
PS Both dogs thankfully made a full recovery! Let us know how she gets on!
 
Thanks for the replies, I've just told her to check both the blood illness and if they've checked the pancreas.

Karen, yes he has had the runs, of different consistencies, I was having daily updates at one point.

They then told her to stop the dog food and give him potato and turkey to rule out allergy to food I guess.

Just had an update, the vet told her to ween him off the steroids so that when he is referred he won't be on any, it has made a huge difference and he has picked up.

He is seeing referral vet next week.

My dog had runs on steroids, I stopped them and she was fine, I dunno we try to do the best we can

Lets hope they find out what it is, I'll let you know next week

Update :

She took him to referral vet yesterday, they found nothing wrong with his organs or anything wrong with him, she is happy she was convinced he had cancer and thought it was history repeating itself, this happened to her GSD, but in a way wishes they found what was wrong, they are having him back on Monday now to put camera in both ends, will update you then
 
Steroids can upset the stomach/bowel lining, my little rescue Lucy has Medrone every day for her foot condition ,so she needs a twice daily Antepsin to protect her tummy.Without it she has awful squits and is picky about her food.
 
Ok so we now have a diagnosis after all this time and money !

He has bowel disease and has to be on a prescription diet and medication for the rest of his life, they want to put him back on steroids but she doesn't want to as they made him so ill, they've give her a month along with the diet and other meds (dunno what) to see how he goes without them. So its just a case of now she knows what it is, managing it and keeping him confortable for his remaining years
