Yes thank you to everyone who's suggested sunflower seeds. As regulars will know, my horse has been battling a dangerous illness which resulted in him losing 190kg & having little appetite, so I'm always on the lookout for things he might like or which might put some weight on him. Bought some black seeds today, put a cupful in his bowl...and he loves them!! Yay!! I'd never have thought of this myself in a million years.

Do you have to have black ones???

I assume they are shelled... cant see them eating them otherwise and I thought they were all grey inside :-(

Sound great though, are they just used for weight gain and shiny coat or anything else too??

Not sure if you HAVE to have black ones... My cockatiels have the stripey ones & the difference between the 2 seems to be that the stripey ones are bigger & fatter... 2.5kg of black ones (found them with the wild bird seed in the farm shop) cost just under £4.

According to the advice on here, you just put a mug of the seeds still in their shells into the food... Sounded totally bizarre to me (the cockatiels shell them before they eat them) but I tried it & my horse simply gobbled them up! And it's a lot less bizarre than some of the things I've tried over the winter to coax my horse back to health !!!

Not sure if they're used for anything else...anyone? I'm just after the weight gain!

I can't get black ones out here, so use regular ones, unshelled. PF adores them and is looking really well. Even got some dapples, which I love

I like the fact that they add fibre to her diet (we don't feed hay but alfalfa (lucerne) which is less fibrous) I understand sunflower seeds are also good for neddy's feet.
