Just seen an ad for a pony that is exactly what I'm looking for but the pony is 18 years old and going for £2000 plus tack. I was looking for an 'older' pony but do you think this is a bit too old for the money they're asking?
In a word..... yes, but if its what your looking for and I would think its a schoolmaster of sorts, then perhaps if you go see it you may be able to knock them down a bit.
Without knowing details it is hard to really say, yes at first he does sound expensive but does come with tack, and if he is exactly what you are looking for, within your budget and seems healthy, I would say go for it!
I have known ponies to live into their 40's and work into their early 30's. Horses and ponies really do have different lifespans, I would consider 18 old for a horse, but for a pony, well I would term it more late mid-life tbh!
Yes, the pony is a schoolmaster and does a bit of dressage, jumping, xc, etc and is apparently 100% safe. I think i'll ring in the morning and find out a bit more.
Our pony is 17 and I regard him as a young 'whippersnapper'!! But that's probably because I have a horse that's 33!! If he's the right one, go for it, you could have years left in the tank if he's been looked after properly. Good luck!
We have a 13.2hh JA who is 19yo and she is as fit as a flea and jumps 1.20 tracks. Age wouldn't put me off at all but I would be prepared to ensure that I gave the pony extra care to ensure it stays as healthy as possible as long as possible.
I bought a 17 yr old pony for £1350 last year (a first pony) with tack & I had to gulp before parting with the cash! There were quite a few on the market for around 2K at the time which I thought was a lot for an oldish pony & still do really. Ours had been sold 6 months previously for 2k, & previous owners thought we were getting a bargain!
However, she has been marvelous, has seen it all before & won small son lots of rosettes. So I don't regret buying her at all.
A horse is only worth what you are prepared to pay for it in all honesty. If the horse is right for you and cyou can afford it then go for it but have it vetted!
Go & try the pony & if it is what you are looking for then you may find there may be room for negociation on the price. Many horses are priced to allow for this. In any case, even if the price doesn't come down, if the pony if what you want & you can afford it then why not have it. Get it vetted though but bare in mind that at 18 years old there may be a few issues comensurate with its age.......after all it isn't a 5 year old. You can have great fun with a pony who knows its job. Good Luck.
