Excellent, thank you, I thought my area was low and it is, so I'll carry on putting a tiny pinch of selenium yeast in his feed. Forage plus sell it and you need such a small amount it costs a fraction of a penny.

Thank you! GL7 3NS
You're as low as my area

So the key has your postcode as 0.21-0.29 mg/kg but the important bit is saying that it's in one of the lowest percentiles in England. Highly likely from everything I've read that your grass will be deficient.

I'm supplementing mine. I had thought about a blood test but it's really £££ and my area is in the same percentile as yours so I decided as it wasn't even borderline I'd add it in.

How far up the range do you need to be to have sufficient selenium?
My postcode came out at 50%

Thank you, really appreciate that.

Would anyone be able to advise, I see that Selenium and Vitamin E are linked or often given alongside each other. Off the back of my current Bl**dy horse thread I've been advised to supplement Vitamin E.
Could my areas low selenium levels effect a possible PSSM horse?

Absolutely. In fact deficiencies in Se and Vit E can present like a myopathy. They work in synergy with each other

I'd make sure your balancer is giving the RDA of selenium for starters. You can blood test but I got a quote and it was expensive. I still might though for one of mine

When I first became aware I was in a low area I did some googling and shortfalls in blood selenium have a knock on effect all over the place. I'm low in copper here and it turns out horses can maintain their copper level if their selenium is ok but a drop in selenium blood serum levels also has a knock on impact on copper.

Vitamin E I feed separately to avoid selenium toxicity. I use forage plus.

My young mare came from Chipping Norton and is living west of you, OP, in North Wilts. She was diagnosed with Selenium deficiency (bloods/symptoms) earlier this year. I used Trinity Consultants Alpha Selenium to get her levels up. Be very careful not to overdose Selenium, that can be lethal.

Ok, so I was annoyed at only having bought the vitamin E but sounds maybe best to separate the two anyway.
I’ll get some ordered!
How much is safe to feed, without blood tests?

3mg/day total for horses in decent amount of work....but check existing feeds for amounts, as these count towards total, so may need to supplement a bit less.

There is, I think 2mg in 0.5g of selenium yeast. 3mg is required in total so if there is at least some in the feed or grass then 0.5g should be about right and well within safe limits.
