Chloe has been off work for 6 weeks, and at one point we feared she'd have to be retired (at 15) but I rode her for the first time yesterday, and she was sound

I only took her a bareback walk round the roads for 15 mins as she's shoeless, and possibly had muscle issues (as well as bruised soles/abcess/bog spavin/arthritis - it's been a mystery lameness

).

It was just so nice to be on her again, and I think she enjoyed herself as well

Hopefully she'll be shod again in a fortnight, and then there'll be no stopping her...

We've got a back/muscle specialist up at the yard in the next few weeks, so we'll get her checked over then just to make sure there is nothing else causing her problems, but I'm very hopeful it was nothing long term.

did they never find out what caused it then or a mixture of the above ?

Nope, we still don't know - vet put it down to arthritis (she's 15 and a heavy build) and abscess, but there was no sign of any infection, and both back feet were reacting to the hoof testers, which was confusing, and no signs of bruises either.

I found a twinge in her hindquarter after she'd had a couple of weeks off, and after I massaged it she was much happier picking it up. I had 'jumped' her the night before she went unlevel (a foot!), so she could have done it then.
