I have made the hardest decision ever and that is to let my current horse go to a new home. We have done all we can together and its time for me to get a new challenge and something I can achieve a bit more on. Affiliate in dressage maybe and some jumping.

Anyway. The reason I ask about Selle Francais is that I have been offered one.

I have been told that they have quirks!?! Well don't all horses? I don't know if the Selle Francais breed is known for anything in particular quirk wise?? Can I ask you guys to give me some feedback on the breed good and bad.

Many thanks.

My friend has an SFxID mare.

She's VERY talented and uncomplicated (other than being VERY keen XC - to the point that my friend is very often a bellowing passenger!)

the only quirk of hers I know is that she hates being in. She has to go out early, and come in late or she trashes her bed

well they're of the TB vein so I'm guessing that should tell you a bit!

Or are they warmbloods?

I'm sure someone will say! x

Oh no cant believe your selling Toby

Think your making the right decision though if you feel you have done all you can together.

Trike had Selle Francais lines even though he was a DWB and he didn't really have any quirks really!! He could throw in a buck occassionally if he was excited but apart from that he was really easy to do. He was another one who didn't enjoy being cooped up though but he went into depression rather than do anything cheeky or naughty.

Are you about at the SG HT's by the way?? I am going on Senza so will be nice to meet you if your about??

Both of mine (KWPN's) have at least 50% SF in them as both have a SF sire and they are both extremely talented. Both can jump a house, and one of them has very good paces on the flat too. As for quirks....no more so than any other TBx (SF is just a French TB as i understand it

)....

Selle Francais are the French sporthorse, there was a time (not sure if it is still true) where to ride on the French team at Olympics etc you had to be on a French Horse so they sorted out their breeding etc.

I don't think they are anymore 'quirky' than any other horse, they tend to have a lot of TB and also there are ones with Anglo Arab. One of the more lightweight type warmbloods.

Your description of 'French Sporthorse' is rather better than mine lol! I think you're right about the french team thing too.

They certainly seem to tend towards the lighter frame too

I am of the same understanding as Rambo about SF being a French TB. Not sure I would call them quirky but they do tend to be clever horses and the ones I have come across have all been talented.

Floyd like your two is a KWPN by a SF stallion - he looks like a TB

Who is he by out of interest ?

I like Selle Fracais, but you can't judge one horse's temprement by their breed. I would seriously consider having a look at the horse.

He is by Hugo who is by Grand Veneur.

Well, unsurprisingly, distantly related to Bo (Ma Pomme and Tanagra)

My boy is selle francais/anglo arab so fairly typical of the breed. He has taken a long time to mature and can be quirky. He is now 8 and coming good but he has given me a difficult couple of years.

I have heard this with other SF's but the general view is that they are really good horses. I would definitely get another one even with the issues I have had.

If it is any consolation my boy does not have one common ancestor with Grand Venuer!

we had a SFxTB mare who was lovely, she had an amazing jump, ok not the most careful but she lacked balance. She had the most wonderful nature in the world, she had an endless supply of energy! (not psycho energy!)
we have sinced sold her to a 15 year old girl to have some fun with

I have 2 full brothers who are selle francais crosses (Pouchka)

Both are generally laid back, but totally different personalities

One worries about hacking & leaving the farm and is generally a bit weird as he loves arenas. He is fine as long as he knows his job.

The other is chilled about everything, however he is rising 7 in May and still mouths at other horses (mental age a bit suspect!).

Very easy horses to do and both can seriously jump

Oh cool. Gen's sire is Pouchka as well. Gen is rising 7 and yes he is quirky but talented. His mum was an irish cob and really sensible so he didnt get his quirks from her.

He can be very spooky, doesnt like being ridden out on his own although I do try to get him. Was a nightmare to get used to travelling on his own. I think the best way to describe him is 'insecure'. Not that he should be... ive had him from a few weeks old and done loads with him. He is however getting better and better as he gets older.

He also loves to know his job - which is primarily dressage - and he is pretty good at it.

and he is very easy to do.. i could prob lead him into the mouth of hell and back. I love him to bits for all his quirks.

Its hard to judge a horse by its breeding ... like us they are all individual.

Our SF is by Veneur de Baugey who i believe is by Grand Veneur. The Dam line is Anglo Arab.

Jasper is 8% arab, just seen in his eyes and ears.

Lovely people friendly boy with a big jump and kind but cheeky nature.

Bred in the Le Pin area which is the hub of french SF breeding.

They are mainly blood horse TB, with a dash of arab and a little bit of draught horse of pony

Over here is hoatching with SFs and Ive worked with many. Ive alwasy found them to be 100% sane and honest , although as with any breed there always the odd nutter. I love them. Mairi.

They tend to be very good jumpers above all else. I have evented two to advanced, I love them. I have heard people say they have difficult mouths, but I didn't really have a problem with either of mine. If I was given a cheque to go and get myself a horse I'd be off to France in a flash.

The Selle Francais were named as a breed in the mid 1950's. They were initally bred crossing English TB lines with trotters or Normandy mares. The breed developed into two directions - producing the Selle Francais and the French Trotter. We have a Selle Francais stallion (the horse in my signature - at various stages of his career) and a gelding. Both lovely easy horses - with no quirks really. We also have 1 French Trotter (very quirky) and a trotter cross (very easy).

Your stallion is stunning.

It seems like a good choice then to go and view.

Its really sad that I am selling my old horse but so exciting to be buying a new one.

Wish the weekend would hurry up!!!!
