Hi everyone, this is prob a very silly question but wat is the difference between tbs and sfs? As I understood it the selle francais is just the french 'version' of an English T.B is that right or am I just very confussed?!!
thanks for that! I really liked the french team horses at the europeans this year particuly Galan de sauvagere. (surprise surprise!)Does anyone know how hes breed?
Mind you, some French steeplechasers are officially SF; in this case they are very nearly TB with and would equate to our part-bred National Hunt families, some of which have eventually been promoted to TB status.
And dont forget the influence of Arab & AA as backed up in this article;
History of the Selle Français
The Selle Français was named a breed in 1958, with its first stud book published in 1965. The Selle Français was created by crossing regional breeds with trotters, Thoroughbreds, Arabians, and Anglo-Arabians. All stock was registered in the stud book with pedigrees tracing back generations, making the Selle Français one of the few Warmblood breeds to have received very little foreign blood.
The most influential breed was the Anglo-Norman, developed in Normandy in the 19th century by crossing Norfolk Trotter, Thoroughbred, and Arabian stallions to refine the local mares (which themselves traced back to the medieval Norman war-horse). About 90 per cent of today's Selle Français trace back to this breed. Other regional breeds used to influence the Selle Français were the Charolais, Corlay, Vendee, Anjou, Ain, and Ardennes.
A small number of Thoroughbred stallions influenced the breed. The first was Orange Peel who stood at the national stud from 1925 to 1940. His grandson, Ibrahim, also had a great influence on the Selle Français. Furioso, who is thought to be the most influential Thoroughbred in warmblood breeding, Rantzau and Ultimate were also incredibly important in the Selle Français breed. The names of these three Thoroughbred sires can be found in virtually every successful modern Selle Français.
Is joly Jumper still at stud? can anyone recommened any Selle Francais in this country? I have an 15.3 INT event mare by Grannex the other halfs t.bxI.D. I would like to breed something to event, my mares well but together, but I'd like to add a but of size and scope to her, and a warmblood is just a bit to heavy for her as shes a bit on the chunky side!
Don't think so. He's listed as national sire until 1996. He was born in 1975 ! Galan must be one of his last foals (he was born in 1994)
Check out www.sellefrancais.fr
Selle francais are fab horses ( I have 8 of them so may be a little bit biased) They are jumping machines. The walk and trot is not usually anything special but the canter is pure power. My first selle francais mare took me from BN tracks to 1.30 opens in 2 years!
Puggle have a look at equineai website. There are lots of selle francais stallions available through AI. However a lot of SF are on the chunky side. I put a couple of mine to Holsteiner stallions last year to 'lighten' them and I am really pleased with the results. One of them came 2nd out of 80 foals at a show last week
Haha thanks for the offer thistle but i've already got one thats 100% donkey it just disguised as a 16hh warmblood!! DAHH which Holsteiners did you use?
I suppose one of the best known Selle Francais horses was Dallas, now deceased, who at one time was leading sire for eventers and showjumpers and his progeny even show up as hunters. One of my horses is by Dallas and his claim to fame is that he is a half brother therefore to a Burghley winner, Diamond Hall Red. Sounds good when you say it, but can't see mine ever getting that far! ( Certainly not with me on him....) I think he won with Mark Todd on board and then I saw him there again a few years back with a different rider, but he didn't do anything spectacular. Dallas stood in Bedford with Sue Rawdings (or is it Rawlings, I can never remember) and I think Matinee is his and Dexter's Puzzle, a coloured.
Yes he as owned by Lady Inchamp & stood at Rawdings Leighton Buzzard he has a son graded with SHGB Cameo's Reflection. I was not a fan of Dallas or Dextre come to that, but far more experienced people rated him. If we all liked the same thing our choice would be very limited.
Puggle, I used a stallion called Cardero (on the selle francais stud book he is called Champs Elysees) and Quaprice. Both stand at the haras de bois margot in Normandy. The cardero foal is beautiful. I would put a photo of him on here if I could work out how
The best Selle francais stallions at the moment are Diamant de semilly and Quidam de revel. Great horses but very expensive. I find them a bit old fashioned but no denying they are serious horses!
The SF Aubrillo stands in Cornwall - he was bred by the same person in France who bred Dallas and is by Brilloso (sire of Dallas) out of an Rantzau mare.
Although an older stallion he is fairly new to the UK (2005 was his first season, I think). A fairly chunky chap who would probably need a TB mare for best cross but I believe he has many progeny doing well under saddle in France.
I've always loved SFs. Id like to have a pure bred one, I like chunkies!! I'll have to have a look at all these stallions. Failing that I'd settle for a QH!
I went to see Dallas when I was looking at stallions years ago & he was down as SF. This link also lists him as SF http://www.horsemagazine.co.uk/pdf/breeding.pdf
At the time they also stook Ra Nova & Sky Rocket again I did not think they would suit my mare.
