Nearly bought one, but was lame behind and woman wanted to jump her for me! Bah. Sorry, I digress. Heard a lot of good about them, but need a good and confident rider
They are in fact the French Thoroughbred - they have a General Stud Book just as the English TB does.
They tend to have more bone and substance than the modern English TB which is why they are sometimes confused with the lighter type of European warmbloods eg KWPN
We have 2 SF x ISH - both 17.2 and have fantastic trainable temperaments with huge jumps. Really good looking horses - the only downside (and which makes them very careful jumpers) is that they are very spooky - particularly bird phobic!
My sister in law has 1, he is far too intelligent! Can be badly behaved, hates being turned out too long, but when hes in the right mood does a brilliant dressge test!

Not helped by the fact that KWPN keep nabbing nice Selle Francais stallions and grading them into KWPN studbook!

I have one - well strictly speaking he's KWPN x ISH - but his sire is a pure SF (by Quidam deRevel) graded KWPN - and his dam is by Errigal Flight (King of Diamonds.) He's 17.1 - and goofy and gorgeous. Mine's not bird phobic - but then we are ALIVE with pheasants - so I guess he's been desensitised!
He has a naughty sense of humour - if I put a novice on him, he just stands still and won't move until I chase him with the lunge whip!
I have a purebread register SF (the horse in my signature) and she is wonderful! Very intelligent (which does lead to her being cheeky and defiantly needs a competent rider to put her in her place at times!) but she has the most beautiful temperament and really listens and responds. I do everything with her (happy hack, XC, SJ, ODE, dressage (technically my friend does the dressage with her but same principal!), even done some working equitation on her
), and she is great, just tries and tries, excels at eventing . She is also a brilliant dooer-lives off thin air, that's the warmblood-but has very good pace on her-that's the TB! I would defiantly get another and am hopefully going to have a foal from her in a couple of years
Sorry bit of a gush but she's awsome! PM me if you want any more info!

Agree totally with this one. Have had mine for a year now. she is fab and I wouldn't swap her for the world but she can be very opinionated and we have to work through our "power struggles" ie I'm the boss not you. She can be distracted at the drop of a hat, very dominant mare, BUT so loving (to the point of stalkerish possesivness) have amazing paces and jump and its all slowly coming together. Love her to bit but you do need to be a confident dominant rider
Selle Francais are not French Thoroughbreds. They are French warmbloods/sporthorses. They have TB blood in them , just as all warmblood studbooks do.
They were always known for jumping ability and poor mouths (as in ridability). As someone already pointed out different bloodlines/families will bring different traits, but normally big scopey jumpers.
I had one who was an eventing schoolmaster, and he was superb
He was 16.3hh so quite big for me at 5'2" but he was a total gentleman, great on the flat, absolutely 100% awesome and fantastic XC, and careless SJ
He was incredibly easy to do on the ground, never ever put a hoof wrong, and I miss him desperately - had to sell due to lack of money, luckily I do love the pingy TB I have now but he isnt nearly so honest for numpty me
My mare is an SF (she has a small amount of Arab blood too but is mainly SF). I love her to bits - she is sharp, very clever and a bit quirky - and has scope to burn, far more than I've ever been able to utilise! As with any breed, one horse differs from another but I would 100% recommend Selle Francais horses on the basis of my own mare
I know 3, 2 geldings and a mare, of which the mare and one of the geldings can be complete pigs and if you upset them then good luck, i'm not fond of them at all there both are bery bolshy and difficult to handle, but supremly talented showjumpers, The other gelding is a total Gentleman, so so easy to do and very mannerly, more talented than the other 2 in both showjumping and dressage without any of the stupidness the other 2 show, they all have similar bloodlines but are not closely related, funny enough all 3 are chestnut and the two geldings look very much alike.
I have a 16h selle francais imported from france 3 years ago now by Nobel V. He is amazing. We had some problems at first that i think by the looks of some of these other posts are quite common. He is more clever than me but after 2 years he finally trusts me 100 percent and i know he would do anything for me. I bought him real cheap as his old owner was scared of him and he knew it. Totally dominant if you let him get away with it. but he is the most fun ever! and totally solid my friends give him the nickname robo horse because he just keeps going ! he looks after me xc and when forced to can go well on the flat. he is so sensetive though and really affectionate but i think this comes once you have the trust established if he dosent trust you you have no chance!
