I've got an advert running on Horsemart for a really decent dressage/jumping/allrounder horse at a fairly high price (£9k) - he's been on there several days now & I've not had any enquiries. Do you think I'm wasting my time advertising a high value horse on Horsemart, do I need to bite the bullet & advertise in H&H?

I noticed that he was pages & pages down within a day or so because there's always so many new ads going on. Do you think I should pay the additional £20 to get him kept up the top or do you think people bother to trawl through all the ads if they're serious? (as opposed to the peopl who contact you asking if you'd consider a loan!). I know I would trawl through...

He's a super horse, there's lots of nice photos of him on there - I'm just surprised I haven't had a single enquiry yet... Do you rate Horsemart?

I personally look at Horsequest more than Horsemart. H&H is the best way of selling though.... put another £250 on the price to cover the advertising

Would he be a suitable pony club horse? Cos I look on there alot too, they have some decent horses on there. And horsequest. And, of course, h&h.

I do look at Horsequest but hate it, much prefer a site with a search facility and recently have been looking more on the Horsedeals pages.

Personally I tend to think of Horsemart more for lower priced horses. At that price I would agree that horsequest or H&H would be your best bet. Additionally if I am spending £9k on a horse I want one that is more specialist and would not be looking at Allrounder type adverts - but maybe that is just me!

What's the link for the advert sal?
One thing I will say about internet advertising is that for decent horses it's worth updating the advert with the date saying that he's still for sale - I'm often of the opinion that I'm too late if a good horse has been on the site for a while - When it's probably the opposite - ie they're still available!!

(I didn't know you had another horse btw?)

Kate - it's HORSEMART AD - I'm selling the horse for a friend, he's not mine. Do let me know if you think I could improve on the ad - constructive criticism very welcome!!

He looks a lovely horse.

I think the dressage pictures dont do him justice. He looks heavy in the hand in the first on and unbalanced in the second. Do you have any others?

Also, I think £9k is a lot or a 12 year old allrounder. Sorry

I disagree - I think that he's worth the money if someone can pick up the reins and go straight into bd/be/bsja - I think he's a lovely looking horse (which goes a long way as a flashy horse is always a bonus) - he could quite easily be "just a dressage horse" or "just a showjumper" - But what's the point in that if the horse is capable of and enjoys doing other disciplines?

Sal - He's lovely I wish he'd been for sale when I was looking for a horse - does he hack out - is he good in traffic - to load/clip etc?

Horsequest over Horsemart ANY day - I have almost given up with Horsemart now as it drives me insane.

With Kate - what is he like day to day.

Price wise....I would personally put him at a lower price but that is because I am not a dressager and to pay that much for a 12yo I would want to see that he had jumped NC DCs at least.

I would change the order of the photos and have the jumping one first so that is on the index page - that or the conformation shot. The dressage pics aren't that nice.

Also change the wording on the ad so that his performance bit is first as the first couple of lines show up on the index page and you need him to stand out. Have his breeding near the end.

Hi Sally, I'd def put the ad on horsequest or h&h - that's where i'd be looking for a horse like him. If you want to change the dressage pics i think Amanda has some nice ones. xxx

I've had success with horsemart in the past, more so than horsequest, the enquirers from HQ in many cases sounded idiots. (teenagers ringing up with no money!)
The horse you have advertised is a nice sort but the price is a little too much for a 12 year old. I think more realistically £7750 is about right.
the age once over 9 seems a major factor, silly I know as most of us know horses can go on competing until their twenties, but psychologically it is a barrier.
I've had a 12 year old mare with lots of competion experience for sale for three months now, and although she isn't the easiest of rides and we have dropped her price to £3500 as people tell me the age puts them off.
I feel something you can near enough guarantee will always go clear XC has to be saleable, but after using HM and HQ I'm beginning to wonder where to go next!
H and H is just too expensive I'm afraid, fine for horses over £5000 and cheapies, but middle of the roaders like ours £250 ads aren't viable.
I think if a horse hasn't sold after a couple of weeks then change the ad/pictures etc, we got a flood of enquiries initially then nothing, I'm assuming she's dropped out of sight on the listings.
I think perhaps in his case a better flatwork pic would sell him, that one doesn't show his capabilities off well.

Hi

FWIW when we were selling daughter's 13 yo all rounder 18 months ago (albeit twice a RC Championship winner) we had one reply from H&H, nothing from Horsequest and 17 replies from the Pony Club website which was at the time only £5 for 3 months. He eventually went to a lovely family who enquired via the PC ad.

Her new young horse had been advertised on Horsemart, although we hadn't actually seen the ad and were told about him by an eventer who had tried him for an owner (she didn't want a black horse!)

Thanks everyone, some really good pointers. Problem is his dressage days were with a previous (novice) rider. The current owner is an SJ'er through & through hence why the 'dressage' photos that are on there don't look great - she really is not a dressage rider - this is just her doing her normal bit of flatwork - shame as he is actually an easy & talented dressage horse.

I've swapped the order of the photos around, added some wording to reflect the fact he's jumped BN, Disc & NC plus added a bit about easy to hack, clip, load etc...

Think we need to look at Horsequest & possibly even H&H...

I notice nobody has mentioned Horse Deals, is that because people don't like it?? I was told the horses there are over priced but I found my boy and negotiated a good price. Just curious because I only ever looked at H&H and Horse Deals when searching.

I got my Tara from Horse Deals actually- I just don't like their search facilities, the categories are rubbish!

Henryhorn, do you have a link to your mares ad?

The horse is quite expensive for a 12yo IMO, I know people that have sold similar horses on horsemart yet had no joy on Horseandhound. You could try the £20 offer on horsemart and how about uploading a video. I have found in the past horses with video's have sold a lot quicker. Good luck, as said I never use HQ as there is no way of searching and it frustrates me

Hi Sally, I think you need to get a video of Ollie to really show him off, it’s so difficult in pictures to really see how the horse moves! I’m sure you will find a great home for him very soon, think the market is a bit sticky at the moment with the whole credit crunch thing.
