Right, someone is coming over from Italy to the UK, and whilst she is here she would like to see Sparky. If she wanted him, he would go back to Italy. Someone has advised against it as a lot of them then get sold for meat - and I really don't want that!
What should I do? and is it a nirmal thing over there to just sell it for meat/what is the likelihood that he will end up on a plate??

Thanks

Ellie, they are NOT going to pay the sort of money you want for Sparks to send him for meat! Add to that the cost of transport and I think you can be assured he will be going to a good home and be well looked after! We buy lots of horses from the continent, why does everyone think it is so suss to send them over there?!

There's quite a good trade of little event ponies to Italy, a friend of mine sold her to an Italian and it's doing very well there.

Unless you're selling him for £500 I doubt very, very much he'll be going for meat!!!!!

It would be a bit extreme for her to come over, pay ££ for a pony and to get him transported to turn him into steak

Wouldnt think there was a high risk....

They sound really nice as well and willing to pay the money, which I will admit is a lot and he is overpriced IMHO but I need the money for next horse etc. He might be worth it to some poeple though!

RS - It would be really sad to see him go, but it would make it easier in some ways. I have their email address and phone number so I could keep in contact etc

Hello

Just to let you know, I live in norway yet ALWAYS buy from the UK...

I have more choice in the UK of better quality¨horses, the price is around the same but quality in UK is much more superior.

People are always suspicious of me when I call about a horse and say my sister will come and try on my behalf, but I have bought quite a few this way. The cost of transport is a fortune £1,500.00 for me each time with John Parker, so no I would not of thought the horse will go for meat!

My Welsh D Taffy was bought this way and he was the best horse I have ever owned in 29 yrs of horse ownership, and I owned him until he had to be PTS with crippling arthritis (was unfair to keep him as a field horse, as he got so bad, I did not care I could not ride him for the last 5 months but I had to do the kindest thing he was in visable pain just walking around the field) although he is still here in spirit as he was burried in the back field.

Rosie my kids Welsh A (in sig) was bought this way and has proved after 4 yrs to be a pony worth her weight in gold.

Now Anna (bay in sig) was bought a month ago and will hopefully make her way here after I have spent 17 days with her when I come over on Friday (if all goes well between us). She is on my sisters yard until she comes over.

Be cautious but please dont discount buyers abroad, I have provided a lovely home for mine with high standards, a good yard and lots of love and time spent with them. John Parker are great to my horses when shipped, the trucks are heavenly for the horses and they get star treatment and overnights on yards specified to me on the way here, they always arrive calm and chilled out.

I know this is not always the story, but nice abroad buyers are out there!

HI, if he is of value (ie. not just £50) then they are highly unlikely going to sell him for meat.
Travel to Italy will immediatley put another large cost onto him too (£750-£1000) and so I doubt very much they will do this.
Yes they can travel cheaper, but in cattle-style. They would have to be buying large numbers and at very low cost!

Italy has some lovely places very much equestrian focused and I'm sure if they are making this effort- he could be going to a great home.
