I found out today that I'm pregnant.

This has kinda scuppered my plans for me and my big girl. I've been trying to sell her on and off for about a year but I've never been impressed enough by the people who come to view her to let her go. But now I've really got to do it because I won't have time for her.

My others are all youngsters so it won't hurt them to wait but my big girl is 12 and needs something to do. She needs backing properly (ex broodmare). I was always planning to do it and now that I've got access to a menage I thought "Yay!".

I really don't know how to go about selling her. Last time I tried to sell her I ended up with some dodgy dealer types after her, or people who expected a perfect rideable horse. She looks like a Belgian Draught horse and she's very popular with the local travellers (so popular she was stolen once) which is why I'm extra cautious with her.

I'd like her to go to a home where they will love her and turn her into a good weight bearing riding horse or driving horse. It would break my heart to see her used as a breeding machine or being sold on and on.

So what do people suggest? Shall I put POA on her ads instead of her price? Or would that put potential buyers off? Should I raise my price? What do I do?

What about paying to get her professionally schooled so that she'd be more saleable? It would increase the number of prospective buyers and you could ask for more money, recouping some of the expenditure.

If people want rideable, this might be an answer.

If she is 12 and unbacked, it obviously does make it harder! have you thought about project horses and say a LVWTB? or that if someone backs her you would split the percentage of a sale? or even (and I have no idea if this is feasible/worth doing it) have you thought about putting her into foal next year yourself.

This is a good idea. Also, could you advertise for a sharer/loaner with her to remain where she is? I'm sure there are people looking for project types out there.

This is just a thought - but why does she need something to do?

If she is 12 and not backed, another 1 or 2 years won't make much difference?

If she a good do-er at grass is there anyway you could just keep her in a field?

How about a lwvtb or a broodmare loan/sale. I can't see why she now needs a job? Has she already had a lot of foals or is throwing bad stock? Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

Or just sell her as unbacked if you don't want the hassle of sending her to be broken.

Congrat's by the way

Thankyou for the suggestions and congrats. It's all been a bit of a shock. Not only am I pregnant I am 11 weeks pregnant!! I can't even remember when it could have happened but hey ho! lol

I guess she's just my special girl. I bought her three years ago because I just loved her gentle nature but I struggled to find a decent place for her to stay. We live miles from any decent livery yards so I've had to rely on grumpy farmers until we got a yard this year. I always had big dreams for her.

She throws out good, sturdy foals.

I've just had a text from a friend who says she'll try and break her in for me. :D
