I’m replacing my stables next spring so need to sell my existing ones. I have a block of six, four 12x12 and two 14x14 corner boxes, plus a ‘lean to’ that is a small pony stable and storage barn.

The stables are 17 years old but in excellent condition, they’ve been treated every year and had new onduline roofs lined with chipboard a couple of years ago.

I have no idea what a reasonable sale price would be. I would need the buyer to dismantle them.

Any thoughts folks?

We got £200 for two stables in 1990 but the person who moved in to where we were bought them as I had intended to bring them here. I think dismantling might put some people off.

My local farmer had 3 12x12 that were only a couple of years old for sale recently, he had dismantled them and offered to delivery (but not reassemble) he was asking £1000 but got no interest and they eventually went for about half of that.

Are they all in one block? you might get more interest for pairs (bit more manageable to transport)

It's a big risk agreeing to dismantle because at that age they could fall to bits at that point!

Maybe have a look at what similar would cost new then take off transport and time to dismantle and then start with 30% of new cost and see if there is any interest?

I was going to buy a block of 4 with a hay barn and tack room. They were old but very solid, complete with rubber mats all round for £500. Buyer was to dismantle, however they would have been very difficult to take apart as they had been built on site with a nail gun rather than screws and transport would have cost a fortune, so I didn’t buy them. Maybe you should invite viewings and say you are open to offers.

Even screwed together could be very difficult to take apart. I recently had to take down a shelter that had been screwed together for about 6 months. I think perhaps the wood had swollen slightly and was gripping the screws very tightly, or maybe there's a type of screw that should have been used and wasn't . In the end we took a saw to some of the uprights instead. I wouldn't do it again no matter how cheap, possibly even a free shelter/stable I'd refuse if I had to dismantle it myself.
