Im thinking about putting my horse lorry on the market... Its too big and I want some smaller, i only want to go to lessons, some local shows and if I have to sleep overnight, im happy to take a blow up mattress and plenty of warm clothing...

Anyway.. Anyone know what the market is like at the minute? Is it much like the horse market.. I dont want to sell it for less that I bought it for, but really I want it moved on before I start uni (hopeful thinking!!)

Its an F reg Layland DAF roadrunner, 2 horse, massive living, brilliant chassis for age, odd bit of rust on the outter metal parts (bit of a rub down and a lick of paint would be needed) other than that its pretty perfect with solid floor, sink, hob, tack closet with toilet. 5 Gear, power steering and Ive just done a bit of painting and spouse up in the horses area... open to offers... ;)

We are currently looking at horse lorries for sale to purchase in the next few months/early next year and sorry to say but I have noticed that lorry prices have been dropping and I have noticed from looking at adverts that the same lorrys trying to be sold are still there a few weeks later with there price reduced, which is great for me but not so for you! sorry! all the best with selling :)

Ive had my 3.5ton box for sale for a month now. Had 1 enquiry. Im thinking of keeping it over the winter and putting it back up for sale next year.

haha unfortunatly the new foalie hasnt arrived yet so a horse lorry without the horse may be a little silly! (this is the frustrating time of cross over from horse to new horse(or foal) that im beginning to get bored of!)

however from your point if your looking for something smaller we also considered one of the smaller types kind of like the equi-treck forward travelling no living etc? as a wee run round around until the foal out grew this but the prices were ridiculous! something you might want to consider before selling yours!

Am one of those looking for a box, but am having to really weed out ads.
Some are vastly overpriced - who is going to be spending a goodly 5 figure sum on what is later discovered to be a 20yr old, unmaintained chassis (however pretty the living is?)

Have decided to discard the idea of a 3.5 & am actively looking for a 7.5 - but there are huge differences in prices.......and some out there are very ropey once you get into the mechanics of it.

So - drop me a PM if you have a 2/3 horse box (only really need space for 2 max tho), living with oven & fridge & loo/shower, through cab on a cab-chassis from 1998+ ;) No rush, happy to wait till xmas-ish

hmm yeh Ive been looking at those van conversions, they seem perfect really, you can get them for a good price too.. split ramps, newer, younger, what more can you ask for! lol

Interesting thread as I am just about to put my lorry on the market. It is true to say that you have to realistic atm re prices. My lorry is a 3 horse with living 7,5 tonne and in good nick, brilliant mechanically but is a K reg with a 5 year old coach built body but even so I will have to be sensible if I really want it to sell. My mechanic thinks it is worth at least 5.5k but I will advertise it for a lot less as I want it gone as my horse is retired and can't see the point of letting it sit there whilst I wait it out for a high price.

Unfortuntaley at the moment ther are so many commercial vehicles being dumped on the market due to the current economic situation and with so many people now building horse boxes that the market is completely over-saturated with horseboxes. I am afraid that to sell a horse box you need to price it very competively. The current economic situation is unlikely to change much for the next 4 years. However scrap metal prices are boyent at the moment and for a 7.5 ton you could get about £500 as scrap.

Ditto FF.

We can't believe the prices that sellers come up with just because the box is pretty? Yeah, but we need it to be on a lorry that goes somewhere without blowing smoke, burning oil and crunching gears and is not covered in rust and falling apart please!?

I am looking at the moment for a 7.5t with a healthy budget (imo) of £10k and hardly anything warrants a phone call let alone a viewing!

Some people have very distorted views of that their lorries are worth (based on what it has cost them to keep on the road!).

If people used that logic with selling horses you would never find a horse under about £8k!

I put my 3.5 ton R reg ldv no frills, takes two 16.2 on a certain auction site at what I thought was a good buy it now with best offer and so far havent even got 1 watching.
I am watching several but cant afford to buy until I have sold that and the car , which is selling but at very low price for the type so buyers seem to have gone into hibernation

I almost feel that its worth just sticking with what I have if the market is so lousy and giving it a total re-furb.

The considerations I have is I do worry about the age a F reg its no young chicken and I dont feel ultimately confident if I was to go on a long journey it would get me there and back, unfortunately these thoughts have been enhanced by a very un-horsey mother, who has driven new cars all her life telling me it will break down with me if I go anywhere in it! lol I've also told her she has told me to cut my coat to my cloth all my life which I have done with this lorry (I also support 3 soon to be 4 horses by myself and am off to uni, so funds were not at a maximum) and seeing as she now drives a 40k+ range rover, if she feels I ought to have something newer and better Im sure she could spare a few quid to help me out! lol

I have rambled, Im sorry! Anyway.......... What do people think of the van conversions?

Ive heard terrible things about poorly done ones... But if done well I think they're great! :D xxxx

If it can legally carry two X 16.2, ie within the weight limit then you must have advertised it very badly to have no interest. More likely though people are looking at the ad and thinking "Oh yeah, there's another one that's lying about the payload"

If you want to sell it for a good price take it to a weighbridge and get it weighed and make a big thing of that on the listing. If it really can carry two it will go like hotcakes.

Exactly! :)

My budget is between 12 & 18, but in the past 2 months have looked at 4 - 2 of which needed major mechanicals to even think about taking them on:
1 was puffing smoke (despite us turning up early & finding engine v warm, despite owner saying she had just turned it over for 2 mins).
The other had clutch and brake problems and a very nasty whining back axle and shot king-pins so goodness knows how it had passed its plate 2 weeks prior
1 needed a new floor & ramp, rust ridden down the sides under the pretty paint
The last one had soggy mattress in luton & a crack running across it, black marks from fumes in the crawl through as engine cover not secured and heaps of play in the steering.

Not one of these boxes was under 15k

Now, I'm thinking of going with OH's best mate (commercial vehicle middle-man) to possibly get own cab chassis as can pick up 7yr old Daf's & similar for under £5k inc vat with low mileage or even Atego's from around 2006/7 for under £12k - then get body built.................

Or maybe someone can have another suggestion?

OMG!! Ok mine is old but its not a touch on what you have described there!!

I guess people want to get what they paid for it but in this climate its not going to happen! Im thinking of advertising mine as open to sensible offers if I get what I want fantastic if not Im happy to stick and live with what I have.
