So I know technically it’s been banned and it still goes on but do people think horses should or should not be advertised on Facebook?

I bought my last 2 on Facebook and don’t feel it was a negative experience at all.... I’m not sure of the politics or legalities but I do miss the freely advertised horses there

Personally I can’t see the problem if it’s a page purely with horses for sale.
Most people have access to social media so it’s the easiest way.

I've bought and sold on Facebook with no problems in the past. I like it because it is an easy way to know the animals or buyers are local.

I get lots of posts on the local Riders group and there are some excellent horses. If I was looking for one there is often a really good choice of all sorts from children's ponies to potential eventers and everything in between.

I've brought three off of facebook and went to visit a couple more, plus enquired about lots of others.

I cannot see any harm in it at all, as long as the seller asks plenty of questions. What's he difference between seeing an ad on facebook or on horse and hound?

There used to be some really good specialist groups, I was in an active heavy horse one, a Clyde one and a double dilute one, as well as the more general regional pages.

I found my lovely filly from Facebook.
I followed the stud at first as they bred such beautiful athletic looking youngsters , which I admired so much eventually I bought one .

Without Facebook I would never have known about them.

I’m a bit uncomfortable with dogs being sold on FB but I don’t see a problem with horses at all. I think it’s different with dogs as they are purely pets and very easy to get into the wrong hands. Horses, being more expensive and not always kept for life anyway is very different.

I quite like buying via Facebook in the past because you can do a bit of digging through the posters previous posts/ pictures and it’s amazing how much you can find. For example I was looking for a novice ride for a friend, advert sounded perfect on a bit more searching through posters profile came across posts asking for advice how to stop it bolting and pictures of it rearing.

I don’t have a problem either, though I haven’t used it myself.

What does concern me greatly is dogs and other animals being passed around for free,

Can we tag Facebook into this thread as clearly there should not be a problem with selling horses on Facebook and they have helped us in allowing it previously to find at least our equine friends and I my case the horse I have always dreamed of owning

It's rumoured to have something to do with PETA having bought shares.

It's not.

There were problems with exotic and endangered species (and ones that are illegal to own in certain locales) being sold through FB and it's much easier to have a blanket ban on all animals than have content moderators trying to identify if an animal in an image falls under legal or not legal.

I find it a bit odd that eBay doesn't allow the selling of animals, yet live fish are on there?

I have no problem with advertising horses on Facebook, it was a useful way of being able to see Lots of pics and videos, particularly of those in local equine groups.

As I understand it, it's because any site that has advertisements that sell life animals has to monitor them and Facebook weren't doing this.

I did do a Snopes search, but nothing came up, hence "Rumoured"

Before horse shopping myself I was of the view that selling animals on Facebook was wrong. Then I was horse shopping and discovered that the breed websites and paid for adverts didn’t have everything. Facebook was the best way to shop for specific breeds and to cyber stalk any potential purchases. I think horses are different to selling other animals. I can though appreciate that it is easier to enforce a blanket ban.

When we sold all the nightmare enquiries and fantasists were via Facebook. We gave up with those after about 5 weeks, advertised in H&H and found a lovely buyer at asking price in a couple of days
