I put my horse on the PC classified site and also Horsequest on Friday evening, and have been inundated with response. I can't show him to anyone until the end of the week as his jump jockey is away, so have arranged 3 definite appointments so far with several others waiting to find out when they can see him. Hopefully with this level of interest he will not take too long to sell, but how do I handle it. Let's say the first person to see him on Thursday really likes him - do I tell them they have to make a decision before the next person sees him on Friday and ask them for a deposit, or leave them to think about it, in which case if the next person also really likes him, who gets preference? Do I ask for a cash deposit, in which case I will have to contact them beforehand to tell them, or ask them to pay a deposit by BACS before the next person sees him?

You can continue to show him to people until someone gives you a deposit.

The first person to give you a cash deposit (subject to vetting) of 10% of his price gets him 'held' for them. :)

Ahhh this happened to me last time I bought a pony, I got to the front of the queue and offered to go there and then!! Yes pushed in as others couldnt go and the owner ummed and rrrd and said well we have XYZ coming and I will have to cancel them....and she didnt want to..cancel!!

We made a reduced offer but fairly she wouldnt accept so we offered her full asking price as long as she didnt show anyone else I paid a deposit of cash and left a cheque for the rest and got a receipt (now get passport no put on etc)

We had to ask her did she want to sell her pony or NOT!! So thats how we got him! We also reassurred her that she could come and view us /reference etc etc. BUT I would make sure you get a good deposit at least off them.

I went to view a horse yesterday and the other people want to buy it but never left any money or deposit so the owner felt she should show me, and I think she was right.

Am about to view another horse and I have £100 in my purse if needed. Most people can get to a cash point etc

All you need to do is sell the home you think will be good and right. Sorry rambling

I would say that you've had a lot of interest and that they can reserve him with a cash deposit. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere I wouldn't feel the need to tell them that in advance, they could pop to a cash point if they like him.

Also make sure you vet them as much as possible. See how they handle your horse and ride him. I know after he is sold there is nothing you can do about what home he has but for the short term its a little comfort.

Buyers know the rules. If you like the horse that much and don't want to lose it to someone else, you put a deposit down on it subject to vetting. Fair enough if the buyer wants to think about it and come back to you but the absolute rule is that - your horse is NOT sold until you have been paid! and you do not put off anyone until a deposit has been put down. When I saw my new horse, another woman had seen him that morning and wanted to come back again 3 days later and have the dealer hold him for her but would not pay a deposit. I saw him, liked him and put a deposit down that afternoon. Was the dealer under any obligation to hold the horse for someone who thought they might be interested? not at all and neither are you! Great news about the interest on your horse as well...

I take it the horse was sold to the other buyer, and you are cross about it?

I would have thought as you, the horse is not sold until a deposit at least has been paid. How come they let you put down a deposit then?

Whoops - if you mean me, serves me right for not being clear!! first buyer liked the horse, wanted to come back a few days later and wanted the dealer to keep it for her but did not want to put down a deposit. I was there later in the day, tried and liked the horse and DID put a deposit down so I got said horse.
