selling horses

I have decided to put my mare up for sale. I have put an advert on horsemart and it had been on there for a couple of weeks. I got advice from my instructor as to how much she thinks I would get for her so have put her up for an ono price. I haven't had a single response from the advert, do you think that's just because it's a bad time of year and no one is buying horses? Should I just leave her on there and see what happens or should I reduce the price? I would prefer not to lose too much money on her but on the other hand I won't have a job at the end of Jan so could do without the extra expense of keeping her. I don't know what to do. I want to find her a good home and don't want to just sell her to anyone as she's lovely.
 
PM me the ad and I can give an outsiders opinion on it if you like, many people on here will do that for you and it will give you some feedback as to what impression of the horse a prospective buyer gets
 
You can pm the ad and I will tell you what I think but I will say that I have never found Horsemart that great unless selling at the lower end of the market, H&H, Horsequest and the PC site usually get a better response, if the horse is the right type the PC site is the best option.

also in case it doesn't say on the details, shs is a 14.3 irish/gypsy cob 9 years old and I have advertised her for 1650 ono

I have just put mine up for sale and had quite a few replies (some of them were because I said possibly loan), I can only guess it's price, although the lady who looked at mine on Friday said she reckons people are wanting geldings atm.

If its the ad I think it is its quite long and a bit rambly. I would maybe just keep your reason for selling as job loss and say that she is forward going so not a novice ride.

Price looks about right to me but I would put some better pics of her, a side on pic all cleaned up and standing square in front of a plain background and a good jumping pic too
 
Thanks everyone, I'll send it to the others who have asked in a bit but I think I have possibly rambled on a bit (not like me at all!!!) So I'll re write it more concisely later and see if that makes a difference! Thanks again for your help
 
Being honest, you make it sound like she is a bit of a nightmare who has caused you to lose your confidence. That coupled with photos that really don't show her off would make me skip straight past the ad.

Get some better pics of her being ridden in good light, and as said above, make the add less wordy. Just say that she is very forward going so not suitable for a novice.

Good, clear pictures make a huge difference, when scrolling through the ads, you want your picture to catch people's attention. If you don't feel confident to ride her ATM, get someone that is and get some good pics done.
 
It's difficult for me too get ridden pictures as I keep her on my own so never have anyone to take pictures with me. I can take better pictures of her standing tied up. I just used photos that I already had.
 
I found the ad by your description above.

To be honest the pictures don't really sell her - one ridden picture which is very dark, one picture of her grazing in which she has a dirty tail (no worries about having a dirty tail - I have two greys, but I wouldn't try to sell them using a picture of them looking dirty) and a third face on picture of her head which is an angle which always makes them look oddly proportioned.

I also agree that the wording is rather long and rambling. The time of year and current weather doesn't help much either.

I have sent you another pm, the ad has been cut by about 90% as it is so long I would have skimmed past after the first line, being honest is great but this ad reads as if she is difficult, the good parts were lost amongst the bad.

As you are selling her as a ridden horse, people will want to see her ridden. They aren't going to bother to come and view if there is nothing in the add to show her off. I know it's difficult, but beg, borrow or steal someone to come help for a few hours, where are you based?

ETA - she sounds a cracking little project or someone :) like others have said, there are lots of positives but they have been lost with the rambling negative at the end. Good luck!

Haven't seen advert but would agree with above, you can always divulge further info during the telephone/email contact.

Also, winter is never a great time to sell and at the moment the weather is dreadful - a lot of my friends with horses, be it at home or on livery, are worrying about the ground etc. So it may just take a little longer at the moment. :)
 
Thanks everyone, I will re-write the advert and try to do some better pictures. I can possibly borrow a yard down the road to wash her legs and take better pictures of her. Fingers crossed that might help a bit
 
Happy to look if you want another opinion, no worries if not... I agree that Horsemart isn't brilliant. I'd try Horsequest; much better in my opinion and don't forget that over Christmas isn't a great time to sell, hopefully there will be more interest now we're out of it... good luck!

I don't know where in Surrey you're based but if you're near me I'd be happy to come over with my camera and take some pics for you.
 
If she is a good type with no problems, that seems a reasonable price, but it is very difficult to find buyers.
The the local riding club sites, may have someone, it is worth using all free sites.
The farrier, and anyone else you know.
 
Thank you so much, I have someone looking at her Friday actually (she messaged me). I'll message you both above and maybe arrange something though in case the lady Friday doesn't work out. Thank you all so much for all your help and advice.
