Would you??? I am seriously considering selling my welsh pony at a local auction, I haven't the time for free loaders, joyriders or timewasters, the pony is stood in the paddock doing nothing, when she needs a job, when talking to another livery she was horrified!!! Am I really that bad??? I have bought many ponies myself from the sales ring, just never sold one through the ring as haven't had to, BUT at the mo people want you to give them a pony!! My theory is people at sales are there to buy, they have the money and are not there to mess around!! same as dealers really, and i've sold ponies to them in the past too AND gone on to see the ponies on the local pc/show circuit which was lovely!! But I cannot believe the look of shock on the other livery's face!!

I certainly don't think it a bad thing, but you must have nerves of steel!! It is pointless taking her and putting a too high reserve on. Also, i would brace yourself for the odd dealer or 2 bidding, thats just what happens at auction. Needless to say there are some lovely owners out there and i have bought a few from auctions myself. Hope this helps your decision!!

well, least the meat man isnt at most auctions at the moment.... he's inundated with animals so has no need to go to market.

On the other hand prices have been low so you won't get much for it.

I don't know why people have such an issue about markets? you usually get to meet those interested before yours goes in the ring (people ask you questions), and so long as it;s not a pile of rubbish and you reserve it well it;s hardly going to go for meat or a terrible home.

I've sold at market FOR a friend (walked them round the ring etc). I would get a friend to take them in the ring for you x

I'm selling my sec a at the fareoaks sale. I've never sold at a sale before but have bought at them. I am told this sale is the best place to get a good price for my pony as buyers come from all over europe to buy welsh ponies and cobs from this sale. I have never considered selling a pony this way but i only own half of him and the other owner was keen to send him. We have put a reserve on him so he can't be sold to cheeply and the other owner says he could be bought before he even goes in the ring. I'm not shore how i feel about him being sold in a sale but he was bought to sell and this is just one way to do it i suppose.

I have no probs with taking the pony in the ring, and a friend has one for sale too so would have to lead that anyways....I probably wouldn't bother too much with a reserve as the pony is unbroken, so I wouldn't expect a fortune!
The sale is held at royal leisure in sussex - does anyone know it?? The pony is good quality, fully vaccinated, trimmed, wormed etc so not a meat job!! And if a dealer bought her - good luck to them, they could make a nice profit once she's backed, and I just haven't got the time....In fact, I'm waiting on a dealer to get back to me..

It just seems sooo much easier, and having bought at sales before I know some very nice people come to buy!! I am positive your chap will find a good home. FO is an extremely popular welsh sale - my friend has sold a few there - one went to norway!! If it wasn't so far away i'd have entered mine!!

if you don'e mind the possibility of her getting in the hands of a dealer and you are not going to be upset if she has gone to someone that doesn't look that good then i don't see a problem. Seems as though you have already made your mind up! Good luck with what ever you decide

I find that very encouraging thanks. I have been worried sick about the sale and wether he will find a nice home but i think he should do as i have broken him to ride and he is also ridden by a 5 yr old on the lead rein. His breeding should help to he is by waitworth west wind. I hope yours sells ok and finds a nice home. It's a fair way for us to the sale we live in hants but we where told it's worth it so hopefully it will be.

It's a funny world isn't it?? I sold a nice [pony to a dealer and she ended up in a fantastic home....yet another livery sold a pony to a "respectable" looking lady who had all the gear....pony now ruined.....TBH I would probably get more money privatley but I cannot guaruntee the home in either case....The best I can do is get her looking really good and backed and riding away quietly, someone is get a nice little bargain!

It is worth it, and with breeding like that and reliable under saddle he will get a lovely home......I orignally bought this mare to sell on - but ended up breeding a foal from her!! plans eh??!!!

I origonaly bought Lucy to sell (she's my 13.2hh welsh pony) but 11 years on and she's going nowhere. Luckly i'm not that attached to pickle and i don't own him fully anyway or i could end up with hundreds of the little things. Not that i mind to much if i could afford it i love my welshies

I dont no why people are so worried about dealers getting hold of there horses, tbh your horse will probably have a better choice of client seeing it.

I sold one of mine through a dealer last year, and i am enjoying seeing her progressing up the ranks in eventing, with double clears and places nearly everytime.

Probably not, but then Im a total softy and it would play on my mind where he ended up or god forbid the meat man bid then Id be mortified.
Im being Stupid I know as once sold, he could end up anywhere anyway.

well I bought lily at 6 months to show inhand and sell as a 3 year old - i never got around to it......she's rising 5 now!! But in the meantime I bought a sec d - I would be mad to sell him and keep lily as she is just that bit too small for me!! But once lily is sold i can put any cash towards next years "summer project" that will end up staying for 3 years!!! I have turned them around in 6 months before though, but when you find a nice one they tend to stay longer!!

I would rather sell to a dealer with a good reputation than at a sale. I couldn't handle not having any influence over who had him/her at a sale - at least with a dealer with a good reputation, they will want to match horse and new owner to preserve their reputation

My welsh A is called Pickle!! I love him to bits though and could never sell him.

Thing is with selling at a sale, you just don't know who buys your horse. I was at a sale yesterday. The meat man was there, and he took many of the ponies away with him. Dealers were also there - and I don't necessarily mean the nice sort. There are dealers & dealers, and there were some nice dealers there too, but also some bad dealers.

I saw one very nice pony, a welsh, ridden in the ring, looked in good condition, would make a lovely kids pony - has been one in the past, not an old pony either. Today I heard that it looks like she went to the meat man.

Selling at a sale is such a gamble. They might be bought by a lovely person, who will love them or look after them, a private person maybe who will keep them forever, or a dealer who will rehome them carefully to lovely people. Or they may go to the meat man, or a not so nice dealer.

Which is why I will never sell a pony of ours through the sale ring - I want to be able to make sure they go to a home that will take care of them. At least if I do it myself, I can ask a good few questions, check the home, etc. It's more hassle certainly, but that's just how it is, and I'd rather that, than lay in bed at night, and wonder where my ponies are, and if they're being treated well.

However you choose to sell your horse you can never guarantee their future.

Just because you make a private sale to a lovely home where the people promise to love your pony for ever does not mean that 12 months down the line they won't run into financial difficulties and have to sell the pony on, either to a dealer or through a sale yard.

Selling anywhere is a bit of a lottery - and don't forget, there are also dealers out there who will pose as private buyers just as there are those who pose as private sellers.

If that's the route you choose, then tbh it's potentially no worse than any other method. And, as you say, you don't have to put up with the dreamers, joy-riders and time wasters while at the same time continuing to pay for a pony that you are getting absolutely nothing out of if it's stuck in the paddock bored stiff!

if you were at Beaulieu Road yesterday, and the pony was a mare with 4 whites and a blaze, she didn't go to The Meat Man.....
