Selling quite a few rugs due to loss of my old lad - Is it best to get them washed first and no takers so far with them still dirty

Maybe lower the price a bit, just thinking what is the cost of a rug wash and proof? You'd probably end up with even less, try advertising still dirty for less first for a least hassle sale perhaps?

Thank you. I have only put them up for £20 for turnout and £15 for stable so thought that was cheap enough

It would probably cost at least that to get them washed . Would you consider offering them to charities for free? Maybe a local RDA for example?

I would say they are cheap enough already. I struggled to sell my rugs (Rambos washed and reproofed) at this time of the year, advertised again at the start of winter and they went.

I find cheap rugs just don’t sell. Idk why. I had the same issue and I eventually just gave them away for literally free and even then one was not wanted and went into the bin. Absolutely nothing wrong with it either. People are weird.

Depends on the rug. I would probably buy a 6’9 100g rug for £20 cause I’m sick of looking at my purple one. I’d also probably buy a 0g even though I have one but it’s very heavy.

This reminds me I have a 50g rug somewhere…must dig that out!

I just sold a gallop 6 ft 9, well used for £ 10 sold last week, currently got a gallop 7ft no fill needs proofing I have it on for & and have a bid. I also have a bran new fal pro never used £ 60 i bought £ 140 been a year and not sold. Unless they are expensive make I would not wash them, I have some from my late horses but I will give them to charity when time comes.

I got mine washed, mainly because I was giving up and they were going to be kept in our spare room until sold, but also because it just felt "nicer" i see pictures of rugs people are selling and they are covered in s**t/s**t stains, wee stains and just look absolutely disgusting - no way would i want to buy that, and then have to arrange for it to be washed at my own expense

Minor mud smears on a turn out i could probably overlook but not waste

I sold mine through a mix of Ebay and local selling sites on FB e.g. market place/local groups. If on Ebay I ensured the price covered my postage costs, on the FB sites, I gave prices for collection and postage

There was a bundle of stuff left at the end, a local rescue who sells stuff to make profits for the rescue offered me a cost for it as a job lot and I just wanted rid, and the offer was reasonable so i took it

I’d only buy if washed first, otherwise I then have the inconvenience of having to get them washed myself and to be honest I then might as well just buy a new rug

They are all 6'9 - 2 turnouts one with neck one without and a stable combo all mediumweight

I've bought and sold several cheap, used turnout rugs in the past and I have never washed one. As a side note I have never bought one I knew to be washed either as I would rather brush off the dirt and know that they're still waterproof. I think it's a bit different if you're selling stable rugs and fleeces, I would expect those to be washed of course.

I think it's much easier to sell rugs on FB marketplace than eBay these days and there are several rug groups you can try specifically.

At £15 stable rugs will struggle to sell, you can find new ones (eg ebay) for under £30 and a lot of people just don't use them anymore.

I once sold a pile of absolutely minging turnout rugs. I had a friend whose horse lived with mine and sadly died. She never bothered to get rugs cleaned or repaired, just dumped them in a shed and bought new. Some of them had small tears but they were all usuable but all desperate for a clean. At 6'3 they were a popular size and worked out at under £10 a rug and could have sold them ten times over, folks were falling over themselves for them. The bill for cleaning them would have been horrendous and really not worth the bother.

I wouldn’t buy dirty rugs but understand the dilemma! Perhaps sell them to your local rug wash company, or a second hand rug company?

There's a lady in Warwickshire who runs a rescue. I got 2 turnout rugs for Lari, 6ft 9. One was £15 and one was £20. They'd been cleaned. I gave her £40, people donate them and she takes them to the car boot and sells them, or sells them from her rescue place.

Lari gets through rugs like they're going out of fashion so it makes sense to buy cheap, even with slight tears in them.

Of the eight or nine rugs I've got for him since he's been at retirement I think there's only one that hasn't been ripped to shreds by either himself or another horse when they play. I'd never buy new again. Always go back to her now. I'm sure there are loads 9f people in the same boat as me that would buy your rugs cheaply.
