Selling your best or favourite horse is never easy, but today i have done it! Fenland Sebastian my 17 yr old Irish Sports Horse gelding, the perfect gentleman he is, has been sold today to two lovely women Mandy & Lisa after they fell in love with him.. I have had Seb for 3 years (not long i know) but in this time everytime out seb has won or come second in showing, jumping, cross country & was a show stopper in my local area! I love Seb to bits & he will always be my favourite competition & horse in general as he has taught me never to give up on any horse, as when i first got him he was a nightmare, nappy, bucked, reared, bronked, bolted, but he shone through & turned out to be the best thing thats ever happened to me, but, with too many horses & new young horses to work on, we came to the decision to sell my darling seb (which was far from easy let me tell you) but seeing the joy & happiness this beautiful horse will fetch Mandy & Lisa has made it all worth while & i wish them all the luck & love in the world with Seb, a big thank you to seb for being fab over all these years, he will always be my hero  xxx

Keep an eye on him. 17years is a vulnerable time for a horse and it would be horrible if the story had a bad end. I am glad that you found a wonderful home for him thought.

If I loved my horse as much as you do, I couldn't sell him on at 17yrs of age.
You sold the old man in favour of your younger horses?
Genuinely glad you've found him a fantastic home though..... Hope it's a forever home at his age.

how could you do it?

17 is not old??!?!?!?!

He could give the new owners a good 10 years riding pleasure - stop being so judgemental!!

Sounds lovely OP, glad you found a great home for him! What are they planning to do with him?

17 isn't old at all.

If noone sold there older horses how would those people that want an older been there done it horse buy one.
He isn't retired and has many years left in him.
There are horses this week that will go round Badminton at 17.

Lighten up on her.

Glad you found a great home for him. I'm sure they will have great fun on him as you did.

So true. Some people are always going to be of the mindset you dont love you're horse if you ever sell it. Thats so not the case. I usually sell my horses before they get older because I only own horses to compete, I'd rather the horse went on to a new home where it could be hacked out happily for the rest of its days - what on earth is the problem with that?!

If he was a "nightmare" at one time you can be sure he will try out his new owners at some point,do hope they are able to cope and your old horse does`nt join the merrie go round of "difficult" horses.Once mine are 12 or 13 then they stay forever to avoid any of that happening.

Judge not etc etc. She found her boy a good home, it was a hard call to make. Don't try to make her feel guilty. You also overlooked the fact that Seb had done his bit and would be put on the back burner somewhat as there were other horses needing to move forward.

I bought my first girl aged 19, she gave me 10 wonderful years & taught me so much I will be forever in her debt. Well done OP in finding him a superb home, it sounds as though he will have love & fuss x 2. Hopefully your Seb will be the same to them as my Kaz was to me, & you have given them the chance for some wonderful memories together.

You shouldn't judge another persons choice, to condemn someone on one paragraph is harsh. Your situation isn't their situation.

Well done the OP, but............I could not part with an older horse, the thought of what can happen to the youngsters is bad enough, but an oldie (yes I know 17 isnt) they deserve for me a happy retirement where I know he/she is safe (ridden or not)
