Well I own Rosie an ID x TB mare, she is 16.2 and will be 15 this year. I have owned her for four years now & I'm considering selling her.
She is a lovely natured horse, so easy to work with in every way but she is spooky, doesn't enjoy jumping and doesn't seem to enjoy being ridden in general. I have tried the past four years to get her over all her issues and we have improved but only because I have got used to her and can now sit to her spooks better & tell when she is going to have a little moment. I don't enjoy riding her because I can never truely relax and have fun and I feel like she doesn't enjoy it but at the same time she is such a sweetie and I feel I have a responsability to care for her until the day she dies. She isn't the type of horse to bond with people, it is obvious she has had an abusive past and she just keeps her distance. I'm just so worried I will regret selling her or sell her to a bad home etc etc etc.
But at the same time I want a horse I can enjoy riding on again and really bond with.

Sorry for the rant it is just a very difficult decision and I would like peoples opinions and would like to know your stories of selling horses, if you ever regretted your decision etc?

Thanks.

I had a dutch warmblood mare that I sold a few years ago and regret it even now, I didn't bond with her at all she'd try anything to get me off and did a few times really putting my confidence at rock bottom. But if I could go back now and have her again I would of worked more with her and got someone to loan her probably, unfortunately that isn't possible :) You can only do so much though as people aren't always what they say they are.

i have an ID mare that is really not a people person, thankfully she is a broodmare, and has fab foals who are totally different to her in personality.
She is more than happy to be left in peace with me going and giving her a good check over each day she tolerates that much but she is itching to get away, she is not nasty but just did not have the best start in life so does not trust people she is 16 now and is just not going to change.
Not sure what to suggest with your mare, i was lucky i was in a position to give my mare a life she is happy with

TBH at 15 if shes tricky she will be hard (tho not impossible) to find her a good home. If you dont enjoy riding her, theres not a compelling reason why others would? Could you find a cheap grass livery for her, and maybe get a new horse yourself on loan to keep costs down, or share a new horse?
if you sell her you will always wonder what became of her and the odds are against her a bit...

I am sure you will find another home for her, just be honest in your ad and don't expect too money for her.

I think we put far to much time, effort (heart & soul) and money into our 'hobby' not too enjoy it.... you should be having fun :o
