Will studs take a mare on full loan? (obviously if they liked her etc.)
How does this work?
And does anybody know of any in the North East area?
Thanks :-)

Yes - some studs will take the 'right' mare on breeding loan. I have two on loan at present and about to get a third (I need another mare like I need a hole in the head BUT this mare is special!)

The stud pays all costs of maintaining the mare and getting her in foal -and keeps the foal. Most studs would prefer the loan to be for more than one foal (unless the mare is IN foal when the stud gets her they have 11 months of upkeep while in foal and 6 months while she's rearing foal; in second and subsequent years each foal has to 'pay for' 5 months of 'in foal' keep and 6 months of lactation keep - so 2nd and subsequent foals are more economically viable.

BUT - the mare has to be well-bred, papered, and a GOOD breeding prospect for any reputable stud to be interested (and you wouldn't want your mare to go to a disreputable stud!!) Needless to say you need a purpose-written loan contract!
