As title really, only ever backed my horses myself but I am struggling for time at present. I think the big lad Zach is ready for the basics to be instilled - I’d like him to have a good consistent start to his education rather than the stop/start I can offer right now.

I am lucky that I seem to have a good number of recommended yards within a 20 min drive and have shortlisted three to see in the next week.

The only concern I have at the minute is stable size and making sure he will fit wherever he ends up going ? But seriously, if anyone has any good questions/things to see when visiting possible yards that would be helpful.

Pics of the boy just because!

Have you got a set time to visit?
I would arrive early to see the true set up, also if you are 'challenged' about who you are wandering around, security is important, if the horses appear relaxed, munching on hay, clean deep bedding etc, the cleanliness of the equipment, cleaned between horses
Can you see horses being worked,
i am a firm believer of first impression vibes....

He looks gorgeous.

Also 'listen', sometimes we become immune to normal horse noise, listen for any coughing..could be dusty hay, infection etc, any shouting from the staff, do they look calm or hassled..
Obviously costs involved and any potential add-ons,
Visiting rights, can you come and watch your horse being backed. Do they work on it daily? Do they give you regular updates?
How often will your horse be taken out of the stable, do they offer grass livery if you wanted it?
Will they contact you asap if any issues or problems, use your vet?

I'd want to see before and after videos of their work as well as viewing them handling and working with the ones they have in currently. Also reviews, I would want to see (and diligence ie speak to) reviews from others who have used them. Yes a good look round at general standards, demeanour etc. I'd want to know what staff they have, who does the actual work with the horses from day to day (ie is it the "name" person or their staff actually). What they recommend timing-wise. How often they will work your horse. Whether they charge extras. How will they keep in touch on progress etc? Will you be visiting regularly? You should. Will they provide ongoing support for you as needed? At the very least I would want to go and ride at least a couple of times under their supervision before taking the horse home again so as to ensure continuity. Overall, check their standards and way of working are along the same lines as yours.

I am not that far from you (same county anyway) mine went for training and it was important to me that I could go when I liked (within reason of course) and that I would be part of it and that's exactly what happened, it was a terrific experience all round.

I pained over the decision but it was the best thing I could have done, I think you get the feel for someone, a place, the routine they have, get recommendations and use your instincts. Luckily I did know someone but it still is a big decision and I would take plenty of time to find out before I went ahead.

Best of luck :)
