hi folks

I am definitely sending my boy away for schooling at he start of next year, I have spoken with a few yards, had some prices etc.

Found a yard if really like him to go to - which has been recommended to me.

What's the done thing though? Would you ask to go and see the yard before you make a decision(I'd like to) I've asked about turnout (he needs it) anything else you would be asking? I've never done this before so need advice! Thanks in advance!

Yes, go and have a look round, the turn out shouldn't be a problem. We turn all our breakers and schoolers out everyday atleast for a few hours. Make sure you are allowed to go visit whenever you wish. I'd say thats the most important, because sometimes you never know what happens behind closed doors. Ask on first assesment how long they think it will take for them to get him to 'x' standard. I know it varies, but some places really do end up taking the p*ss and it is really important you keep an eye on where your money is going.

Thanks so much - I'm a bit scared tbh but he does need it. Would it be an idea to ask to take him for a lesson before so they can let me know how long he might need?

The person is a really good eventer - they might not want my wee ginger horse!

It would be a very good idea to take him for a lesson, it gives you a chance to get a feel for how the trainer approaches things, you may well want some lessons while the horse is away to see how he is progressing, so you should ensure that you are both working him in a similar way and that you like the way they work, it needs to suit not just the horse but you as well.

If they are good they will enjoy working with all types of horse, it can be great fun to see something that is not your usual type make progress and you learn something from every horse you work with, if they have a closed mind they would not be right for you or the horse.

Definitely visit the yard, I would be asking what was included in the weekly fee. Proceedures for (God forbid) accidents and injuries. Whether your horse will be solely ridden by the professional or whether it will be hacked by grooms. Times when it would be convenient to come and watch him being schooled. Whether you could have a few lessons on him there before he comes home. If they get him out competing what would the charges be, fuel etc.
