The British Eventing Senior selectors have today announced their squad for the 2013 FEI Senior European Eventing Championships, which takes place in Malmö, Sweden (28 August - 1 September)

The selected squad comprises:

• Kristina Cook with Mr and Mrs Nicholas Embiricos and Mrs Sarah Pelham’s Miners Frolic

• William Fox-Pitt with Mr and Mrs Jeremy Skinner’s Lionheart

• Piggy French with Mr Michael Underwood’s Tinkas Time

• Tom McEwen with his own Diesel

• Izzy Taylor with Mr Guy Avis’s KBIS Briarlands Matilda

• Lucy Wiegersma with Mr and Mrs Christopher Perkins’s Simon Porloe

-From the BE website

I think it looks like a really good squad. Really pleased that Lucy and Piggy are back on the team, both have had pretty rubbish luck the last couple of years I think. I think Izzy will be a brilliant addition and will be interested to see how Tom McEwen goes. Slightly surprised to see Gemma Tattersall not on the list. Thoughts?

Good team but I thought Kitty King and Zidante would be on there for sure! They've been seriously impressive at 3*. Oh well, the horse is still only 9 so lots more to come!

Interesting with a couple of 'old timers' ;) and new blood. Also really pleased to see Piggy (fingers & toes crossed her prep goes without a hitch) and Lucy on the list.

Lovely to see Tom there too with Izzy Taylor (the one to watch).

Was Tom chosen over Gemma as he won Barbury? Would have likee to have seen Gemma on the list with Arctic Soul too.

We are lucky in this country to have so much talent - am rather glad I'm not a selector!

Really nice to see some new faces on the team and pleased for Piggy French, who always seems to up her game at big events and get excellent performances out of whatever horse she's on.

I believe she is off until next spring.

Tom didn't win Barbury. He did win the under 25 class at Bramham. Gemma wasn't really in contention as Chico Bella hasn't done a CCI 3* and Tropique and Arctic Soul had problems at Bramham and 4 down in the sj at Fontainbleau. It must be the first time that a combination has been selected for a British senior team on the strength of an under 25 result - perhaps highlighting our lack of strength in depth at the moment.

In fairness to Tom he also finished 15th at Blenheim CCI*** last year which was a seriously tough track and has had some strong advanced results with Diesel. Yes not perfect though granted.

I think it is great to see some fresh blood get the chance at senior team level. Yes a few of the big names put themselves out of contention with recent results (Mary, Laura, Nicola) but there are several others with respectable form waiting on the doorstep, how many countries have the opportunity to leave horses the calibre of Armada or any of Pippa's 4 3* horses off a team and I say that as not one of Oli's or Pippa's biggest Fans ;)

Nice to see some younger people getting a chance in the team which is definitely needed given that our main team riders are either approaching retirement or short on horse power. Good to see Piggy and Lucy getting a chance as well

Diesel is a lovely horse and it is great that Tom is getting a chance as he is talented but they don't have the form that would have seen them onto previous squads.
While I am a great fan of Armada, his 4 down sj at Badminton did nothing for his chances and he would be an interesting ride in the tight space of Malmo - he could well end up in the sea or on the nudist beach!!!!! Twisting and turning is not his thing.
Of Pippa's horses, Billy Beware has always been ridden carefully and not chased the time. He is big and long striding so Malmo would be a hard place to test it. Billy Landretti has let her down and doesn't always look convincing. Or Noir de la Loge is a work in progress and has gone down a level. Mirage d'Elle is not the best on the flat and doesn't always run. Redesigned had 5 down at Badminton. For me these and Armada are not obvious team horses although all can pull off a good result on their day.

.....

Agree - Tom was a class act at Badminton - fingers crossed for him on the team.

anyone know the Pony Euro squad? All I know is Yamsin Ingham!

Asked my daughter, from what she's heard it's Yaz, Rose, Charlotte, Chelsea and Libby, with a 6th having not been chosen yet, for reasons known to those involved. Good squad! Hopefully will bring back a huge haul of medals :)

That team will take some beating! Lovely we have many new riders after last years superstars liuke janou and louisa have all moved up! Wonder who the next will be? Would love it to be pumbaa or jamie!
