I'm looking for a sensitive fly barrier cream/spray or gel for my horse's sheath that lasts 24 hours.

Although lockdown restrictions have been relaxed slightly, we're still only allowed up to see our horses once a day. My slot is in the evening so means he doesn't get the extra attention that I would give him, if I turned him out.

He will get fly sprayed but its usually just a "squirt". Not attentive applications to his manly bits or anything like that.

If there is nothing topical - what do people use for sheath protection? Are there covers or anything like that I can attach under his rug?

His poor sheath was covered in blood today from all the fly bites. I'm willing to try anything.

Thanks in advance.

That yellow cream, summer fly cream or something like that is its name. Wear gloves because it stains your hands and makes you look like you have a 60 a day habit!

I use the NAF gels too. I'm not sure how long lasting they are but they havent caused any irritation to my sensitive horse. Always best to patch test too

Currently use Carr and Day Martin Insect Repellant Gel on my boy's sheath which gets very itchy if he has a bite as he has sweet-itch. He has very sensitive skin and this has caused no issues at all. Works as a decent barrier, but agree, always patch test first.

Nettex summer freedom is very good and long lasting several days if not riding, if riding try nettex fly cream as it is cheaper but yes probably use gloves putting it on.

Thank you all for your help.

I think I'll try the nettex fly cream in the first instance, to see if that protects him for the full 24 hours.

Have you had any issues with applying to broken skin or near sarcoids?

He has a couple of small, warty sarcoids and I wouldn't want to irritate them

If he has broken skin I would use the summer freedom than as it heals as well as repeals midges. I have not used the cheaper fly cream on broken skin I use it on his legs which are not covered with the rug. So if you buy a pot of each you give yourself options.
