Apologies for anyone that knows me in RL - FoxhillBelle I wouldn't read any further, don't want to traumatise you.

During the really hot week in June I stupidly did a good half hour in sitting trot and managed to literally take the skin off two patches on my bottom. Despite giving it time to heal it just opens up again whenever I do sitting trot or a decent amount of canter.

I don't mind suffering for my riding and have been putting up with the two very unattractive scars that are developing but its getting ridiculous.

Any tips? I have the most comfortable saddle going and nice M&S undies. I'm not sure what to do other than spending the entire time in a jumping position.

youch! could you maybe 'pad' the areas out a bit like with some cyclists shorts under your jods? or put bandages over them but the type with the little padded foamy bit too...failing that it might be worth going to the doctors...they might be able to prescribe a cream that will help to stop the skin splitting so badly....sounds very painful

Suffering the same problems, I have found that talcum powder on the bum really helps. Basically, it soaks up the moisture and so reduces friction.

Jods with leather seats also help (but not the bank balance........)

That reminded me I have a pair of cycling briefs that are padded & I used to wear them when i had lessons at a riding school as one particular saddle was reknowned for chaffing.

You probably need to give that backside of yours a rest! Sounds painful, you poor thing. As embarrassing as it may be, you might need to visit the docs?

Surely it has to heal eventually, so that it won't open up again? Maybe you'll have to give it loads of time to heal....

as in chaffed the skin?

have you tried sudocrem?

I have known someone try padded cycling shorts.

I have to ride with a hm seatsaver on my GP, noone else has to by I do.

I keep hoping it will heal but then one good schooling session skins it again. I'm going to need one of those haemarhoid cushions to help me sit down.

My only hope at the moment is that at least you don't sit down much out hunting

. I just can't give D that long off from being ridden to let it heal.

Be brave - go and see your Doctor! Seriously you should get it checked out - you may need some antibiotic cream/tabs to help - leave it and it may well get worse!!!!!

in which case doctor, asap, if it keeps opening up you may have a low grade infection in the skin which is preventing it clearing up.

Nice, I have an infected bottom

The things we do for our sport! On the plus side while I was ignoring the searing pain my RI was really impressed with my recent improvements in my lesson tonight.

I think its possible you have an infected bottom, you might not but its hard to see without seeing it!

I would try and go to doctors tommorrow if you can, no point in leaving it longer than necessary

You could always borrow my extra padded seat saver that you very kindly put together for me for that brick of a saddle donkey had lol

mite be worth a go, give me a shout if you want it

Top tip, use Compeed plasters. Stings like hell when you first put them on but prevents skin reopening. You leave the plaster on until it falls off by itself and miraculously your skin heals underneath it. Worked for me when I had a similar problem with my knees

OOO that sounds painful. Sorry I can't think of anything no-one else has said that you can do immediately.
But a friend has had a similar problem (although nowhere near as bad as yours) and we have realised that she actually moves quite a lot in the saddle while riding, particularly while schooling and riding corners and circles. If this is part of your problem, try 'stickybum' jodhs/breeches, a suede saddle or seatsaver, and concentrating on sitting very still in the saddle.
Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, thats a very good idea. I use Compeed on my feet for long distance walking but had never thought of putting them anywhere else.

I think you deffo need to visit the doc. They can ensure you don't have an infection and need extra help with the healing. Going forward when you start to feel a chaff developing I would use something like vaseline (as above) or better still some silicone lubricant (it is not so messy). Just don't ask where to get it from......

Vaseline - not just a bit, smother the whole area. It makes you feel a bit greasy but it works. Also you say you have M&S undies but do they gussets stitched in? I find this is the problem for me, the seam of pants and gusset rubs. Buy the ultra/extra (?) comfort no VPL ones, (think that's what they're called) there are two sorts of 'no vpl' knickers. It's the ultra/extra comfort (more expensive) version you want, they are great. Try a pair of jods a size bigger so that if you are moving around, the slight bagginess means they move with you as often the problem comes when your bottom moves but the jods are quite stretched so don't move with you, and then your skin rubs against the seams.
