Generally speaking my dog is fine, can happily be left at home when I am out and just curls up and goes to sleep. I have an open plan house so he has full access to every room (only 1 floor) and he normally sleeps either on my bed or at the foot/beside the bed on the floor.
When I go to my mums however whilst he has access to the downstairs during the day and is with us in whatever room we are in, at night he sleeps in the kitchen. My room is above the kitchen and the other bedrooms are at the other end of the house. However the last 2 times we've stayed there he's barked the place down in the early hours of the morning. The first time I slept through it and he woke mum up at 2.30, 4 and 6 am, the second time he woke me up at 1.30 am when I went to check on him he seemed fine and was quiet for the rest of the night.
The two things that are strange about this are:
1) he's been completely fine with this arrangement for the last 5 years, I normally stay 3/4 times a year, this started in July this summer.
2) he's normally a very quiet dog - he was nearly 2 before I ever heard him bark, to the point where I don't recognise him barking if I hear him.
The family think that he is hearing someone outside or he can sense something in the house (500 year old barn conversion), however I'm not convinced and was wondering if he could be upset that he can't sleep in my room? However as said if this is the case I can't understand why it is only starting now? Neither myself nor my mum have moved in his lifetime.
Any ideas and suggestions would be most welcome
