My horse is a 16year old hunter and has always been impeccably behaved at shows and home. Recently she has become attached to her field buddy (who we go to shows with) and is making it unpleasant to compete. She gets stressed out when leaving him and will just run backwards and call. I can't hit her as she will buck; kick and she keeps going backwards.
After a while she will settle but during a course of jumps she will just stop in the middle and refuse to move. During showing she will jump around and call all the time.. She's never been like this before and Is fine with any other horse..
I'm afraid to push her too far as I think it could get dangerous, as she doesn't care who she is backing into. Be it people or other horses. It's also not just going backwards a little way, she will literally run back across a field.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I can't go to shows without this other horse as the owner takes us in her box. They are also not always turned out together.
She is fine to be in at home on her own or go hacking on her own.. It only happens at shows and only with this horse.
Please help.

One horse I used to show would only settle in the ring if the horse it came with was outside the ring and she could see him, failing that sometimes the ony way is to ggo alone.

I've been stood outside the other horses ring while they were jumping and she went mental desperate to be by his side.
I cannot go alone as I get taken with the owner of the other horse as it is her trailer

I think lots of people have this problem with field buddies. We keep our horses at home and I've had a couple of horses that if taken to a show with a "friend" will call when taken away to compete or if left on the lorry alone. Fortunately that was the extent of the behaviour and we didn't manage to stop it completely but parked as far away from the competition area as we could so they couldn't hear each other. Could you find your horse another field buddie if you can't find another travelling companion?

They haven't been turned out together for a while but still the same outcome. There are about 5 other horses in the field as well but she does t act like this with them. Only this one horse in particular
