Hi

I took on a 12 yr TB gelding Feb last year he is kept in a field with both Mares and 2 other geldings and last summer he wanted to mount the mares 1 in particular who was constantly flirting with him. He has been tested for being a rig which was negative and His previous owner has never had this problem with him being turned out with mares.

I would separate him but the owner of the other 2 boys does not want to move them and mine cannot be turned out alone.

Only options I can see are getting another gelding or moving yards but in reality I cannot afford to do either but obviously would at a push.

I was just wondering if anybody else has had this problem and it’s magically resolved itself or will it be like this every summer :o(

Thank you

I tend to keep my horses in a group, mares and geldings. On the odd occassion a new gelding has shown stallion like behaviour for a while, but they seem to work it out and settle down, just the excitement of a new girl. :):)

I wouldnt be surprised if your gelding doesnt show any interest when the mares start coming into season this year, as he has been turned out with them a while now. Can you wait and see before getting a bit more radical?

We have 1 mare in particular that is a total tart when she is in season and basically nags the boys so much, with her bum constantly in their faces, that they try to oblige just to get rid of her. We have several of the kindest geldings ever and even they have been known to try for her. I would suggest just seeing what happens this year but tbh, as they are not entire, it isn't going to lead to an unwanted foal so is harmless anyway.
