I have recently moved my horse and my friend's horse from our paddock to another friend's house so we can rest our paddock (and re-seed etc).
Since moving a month ago, my horse, Jerry, refuses to leave his field companion.
At home, I always bring in his field companion if we hack out alone because (for some strange reason) they both go mad if one is left in the field. Yet neither are bothered if one is left in the stable.
Now we have moved, we don't have a stable so I have to leave one in the field. Jerry goes mad, whinnying and calling for his friend and she calls back. If I try to hack Jerry out alone he is really spooky and naps while whinnying.
I decided to only hack when my friend can come with me to save the hassle. The trouble is, our paddock hasn't really recovered yet so I need to keep them off it for longer but I am only riding a couple of times a week because I am relying on when my friend can ride with me.
Has anyone got their horse over this problem? Is it worth me battling on? or should I just resign myself to hacking out only with company and not going to shows until we can get back on our paddock again? Aaaagh

It can be a bit of a battle with napping.
My mare has often tried it over the many years i have had it, i tend to battle on to be honest as its naughtiness.
If the horse is too dangerous then its not worth the risk, but if you can handle your horse doing this the i would soldier on, i did with my mare as i felt it wasn't to dangerous, some horses are just too difficult to battle this stuff alone with though, good luck

Thanks Puss in Boots - I think I might have to give it another go at hacking out without his 'girlfriend'! I just hate it when he acts a prat on the road - I think I'll have to try at a very quiet time of day and prepare myself for a bit of a battle!

I have just read some posts in the 'old' new lounge about horses/riders who won't hack out alone. A fair few people have said that they have managed to get their horses over the issue of hacking out alone.
The thing is, I know he is actually fine on his own because when he was at home, he hacked out beautifully on his own (although always more confidently and chilled out when in company).
Will let you know how I get on!
