hi. i need some help in seperating my horse (tim) from his old field mate (ped). short story is me and ped's owner dont speak since another girl came on the yard (its a 50 year old being jealous of a 21 year old!!) so she decided to split our horses up as hers come in earlier than mine. the 21 year old is having stables built at her house so we are moving there as soon as they are built but she moved in right next door to my yard. the layout will be new yard then her house then old yard. the horses can see each other from the fields. the problem i have at the moment is when i take my horse over to her fields he stresses out and runs up and down the fenceline when ped starts shouting for him. yesturday he came in really sweaty. i'm just really worried that tim wont accept being somewhere different but so close to where he used to be. a friend who knows about horse psycology says that ped is very insecure and has to know where all the others are. he even screams for my horse when we hack out so i end up with a scary hack so dont do it very often now. im just getting so fed up now as everything i do has to revolve around ped as it upsets tim.

ok this is so much easier saying it to people than writing it so if you are lost im very sorry.

Think I am following…

Are there many other horses at your current yard? It is 100% normal for horses to like being with each other and to call for each other if they are turned out together, especially if there are only a few. The smaller the herd, the more tightly they tend to bond in my opinion.

So it sounds as if the separation is going to have to happen, and both will eventually get used to it, and as the problem is more Ped, then it is his owner is going to need to find Ped a companion if there isn't one there for him.

It is harder when they can see each other, so I think you are just going to have to put up with the pacing and calling, and hope he makes friends. You don't say how many horses there are at the new yard - can you hack out with the 21 yr old on her horse so Tim makes friends more quickly?

There is 4 horses at current yard. Peds owner has 2 so its not as if he on his own. The 21 year olds horse is not currently rideable. She is going to reback him soon so still on my own ridden wise. Just get worried about him stressinh and sweaty up in cold weather. The new yard there will only be mine and my friends horse until she gets her competition horse
