Following a nail puncture my 2 year old has a infected navicular bursa and tendon (i think the deep digital flexor)

His prognosies is not good, he's had one OP under GA to flush it and will possibly need a further

the long term prognosis is very guarded if they can get him through this stage - i can't find much about what kind of quality of life he will have as it seems not many pull through - obviously it'll vary wildly case to case but it'll help to have some kind of idea of how much i'm willing to put him through

does anyone know of any horse that has come through this - if so what outcome have they had?

Not quite the same I know, but my horse got an infected coffin joint following surgery on a keratoma growth in his hoof.

We came very close to losing him twice, the infection came on very quickly and was very agressive. he had the joint flushed twice at the cost of nearly 5K!! he made it through but it looks like we wont be able to ride him again, hes still on rest at the moment but the damage the infection caused has left him with arthritis.

Obviously not quite the same but both infections within joints and tissue in the hoof, and sounds like both required the same treatment. Sorry I cant tell you he made a full recovery but he did make it through

Hope yours does the same and regains some quality of life hopefully some one will have experienced something more similar and will have a more positive story for you xx

My father's horse had this and was operated on and returned to paddock soundness afterwards. He was 15 at the time, and already had some lameness due to arthritic changes, and was already in semi-retirement.

thanks TGM good to know :)

He's at Bell Equine in maidstone, very impressed. He had the second op today so its fingers crossed for the next couple of days. we've agreed to call it a day if it re-infects again, poor baby boy :(

Was so glad to hear when I texted you earlier that he had come through today's op alright. Was gutted I was off sick today otherwise I would have most likely seen the surgery done this morning.

I have everything cross able crossed for him and hope I see him next Thursday when I'm in next xx

yep you'll see him :)

he's looking good, still a bit touch and go as it's healing over and he's now on oral meds - if it's going to go wrong it'll be soon. if all's good - home on friday.

turned out to be the most expensive 2 year old ever, bless him

next stage will be hopefully coming field sound but he's got time on his side at least

Bell Equine is where our horse had his op done - so he is in good hands. Fingers crossed he pulls through OK.
